There is nothing like hitting play on a record for the first time and falling in love with every track, that is exactly what happened when we listened to “Absence of Something”, via Candlepin Records, from Boston based , The Collect Pond.
The Collect Pond meld post-punk immediacy and new zealand jangle pop. The Collect Pond is the name under which songwriter Danny Moffat produces his own music. The musicians in The Collect Pond are Moffat: Vocals/Guitar, Chris Anthony: Drums, Roger Maranan: Keys/Bass, and Ben Bonadies: Guitar/Bass. They met through connections as writers with the music blog Allston Pudding and Boston non-profit recording studio The Record Co.
Moffat grew up in Bellingham, Washington State in the shadow of grunge and alternative music. Early influences were Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr., and Pixies. When he was 23, he moved to New Zealand and absorbed the local punk scene when he played in The Future’s Bright (live guitarist) and Frend (songwriter/singer/guitarist) which resulted in the latter bearing a critically acclaimed EP that was requested to be in the New Zealand National Library.
After a couple of years Moffat read the writing on the wall that his VISA wouldn’t be renewed and reluctantly came back to the US, where he continued playing in bands in Seattle, Portland and Brooklyn before eventually landing in the Boston-area.
Moffat was born with a rare spinal condition called spina bifida, which often manifests in debilitating nerve pain. He is reminded everyday how much of a gift it is to physically make music, and that sense of urgency fuels the drive behind creating The Collect Pond. He has studied songwriting with Charlotte Hatherley and engineering with Ayad Aladhamy.
Throughout, “Absence of Something”, The Collect Pond, artfully takes many genres and craft a beautiful melodic masterpiece.
Absence of Something on Candlepin Records is available via tape cassette and digital streaming. Promo shows include The Cantab Lounge in Cambridge, an appearance on CBS/WBZ, The Jungle in Somerville, and Casa del Popolo in Montreal. An audio engineer and teacher by trade, all songs were written and produced by Moffat at The Record Co. in Boston.
Listener’s take an absolute melodic journey, on “Absence Of Something” that stays long after the delightful music has ended. We found ourselves instantly enthralled with “Every Little Thing Is The Same”, “Modern Con” ( the melody on “Modern Con” , is straight up sensational) , “You Could Murder Again, “Net 30 Invoice “ , are solid written gems that we absolutely loved .
The One Song that stood out on “Absence Of Something” was the stunningly impressive melodically perfect, “Give Less” we loved the simplicity of the track. The Collect Pond have really leveled up with “Absence Of Something”
