The Sound Cove Super Sonic Showcase goes down Sunday, October 19 at The Burren in Somerville with The Chelsea Curve, Speedfossil, Happy Little Clouds, Cold Expectations, Eric Barlow, and Corin Ashley

Full disclosure…. We have never met The Sound Cove , founder Garret Vandermolen… But if we did we would give him a big ole fist bump for assembling an extraordinary collection of music with “Super Sonic Showcase Volume 1”

Two summers ago, Garret Vandermolen found himself at a crossroads. His band, Boston power-pop and melodic rock luminaries Speedfossil, was left without a record label after the tragic and sudden passing of Red on Red Records’ founder and operator Justine Covault. Vandermolen casually engaged with a few other regional labels to distribute Speedfossil’s music, but ultimately dedicated to pay tribute to Covault in a rather direct way – create his own label, dubbed The Sound Cove, and carry forth the ethos and reputation she had established within the Boston music community. 

Being on her label was probably the best experience I ever had putting out my own music,” Vandermolen says. “She was not only an amazing person, but also someone who created an artist-driven label that really had an incredibly strong sense of community – she treated all of her artists very well.”  

 In November 2023, Vandermolen released Speedfossil’s “Magic Trick” single via The Sound Cove. A few months later, a new single from Fireking was unveiled. And after that, new music from Eric Barlow, Flying Nuns, and The Daylilies. In less than two years, the upstart label has blossomed as a vital digital singles imprint, with nearly two dozen releases – and counting – under its name

And since any great compilation deserves a great release party, that’s just what Vandermolen has planned, as The Sound Cover Super Sonic Showcase holds court at The Burren in Somerville that weekend for a six-band, four-hour matinée party on Sunday, October 19. “You can sleep late, get up, rock out, and be home for dinner, all on the same day,” Vandermolen jokes. 

The showcase features six bands featured on the comp: The New England Music Awards-nominated The Chelsea Curve (Punk Artist of the Year) and Happy Little Clouds (Live Artist of the Year), as well as Cold Expectations, Eric Barlow, Corin Ashley, and Speedfossil.  

“This comp and showcase have been a long time coming – because we are only doing digital singles, it took me a little while to get enough acts on the label to be able to make a proper compilation record,” Vandermolen notes. “Once The Sound Cove reached critical mass, I knew we could do a live showcase, as well. We’re relatively young, as a label, so I am very excited to be able to accomplish both of these events

We have fallen head over heels for “Super Sonic Showcase Volume 1 “ it truly represents the very very best in the incredible Boston music scene And the release party sounds beyond amazing….. So Good!
