Acting as a portal to a larger world, “Hold On Soul” and its blend of yearning Americana, country rock, and Southern gothic bring us into Dirt Road Souls’ unfurling tale of (The Life and Times of) Johnny Moonshine, an ambitious 12-track concept album and roots rock opera set for release in early 2026. 

Chronicling the rise, fall, and enduring spirit of a small-town rebel with big dreams and a bigger heart, told through the lens of a close friend and narrator, the record follows the mythic arc of Johnny Moonshine — a backroad dreamer, moonshine runner, romantic, and overall tragic figure. It’s a poetic odyssey of freedom, failure, and redemption, all wrapped around an arsenal of memorable hooks and melodic storytelling. 

Few new bands would take on something as enterprising and aspiring as (The Life and Times of) Johnny Moonshine to mark their debut album, but Dirt Road Souls – composed of Boston music scene veterans Davis Black (The Inebriations), Rick Weden (Shotgun Waltz), and Brian Sargent (Black Cat Crossing) – felt the time was right to tell the tale.

“‘Hold On Soul’ was first written many years ago when I had left my small town and gone off to start a life in Boston,” Black admits. “After high school and college years I’d often return to my small town to recharge – and get drunk with my friends who didn’t leave town. These lyrics come from the culture shock between the two places. The stress of the city vs. the simplicity of the small town was very real for a little while.”

We recently had the amazing opportunity to check out the new single, “Painting Of A Tree” , from Boston , based “farm “ emo band, Tiberius. You can listen to “Painting Of A Tree” on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here

There is a real cinematic feel on “Painting Of A Tree” from Tiberius.

Tiberius was originally a solo outing for Rutland, VT-based songwriter Brendan Wright(they/them), with the project growing to a four-piece band upon Wright’s relocation to Boston. This expanded lineup produces a catchy and cacophonous sound that blends Indie Punk, Alt Country and Psychedelia with confessional, conversational lyrics, which they describe as “Farm Emo.”

Following the more frantic Emo Rock sounds of the “Sag“ and “Felt“ singles, and the rustic Poppy warmth of “Moab,”this new single is an aching, slow-burning sprawl, which takes a left turn into darker territory. Downtempo instrumental breaks clash with pounding percussion and raw distortion, as Wright exorcises demons through introspective lyrics like “I hope they love you / Like I do / At least the way I wanted to / Not the way I did.” 

Speaking on “Painting of a Tree,” Wright shares:

“There’s this older man I work with – a kooky gentleman who’s kind of off his rocker – but at the same time can incite this erudite understanding of the human condition. When I asked him if he had any advice for someone really mulling over some heartache, he chuckled. He said, ‘an artist cannot paint a tree, unless they examine all aspects of it.’ I wrote, Painting of a Tree, as an homage to this idea that this kind of hurt was a truly human experience. A kind of pain I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but something that I feel thankful to have experienced. The kind of pain that makes us who we are.” – Brendan Wright (they/them)

We love the vibe of “Painting Of A Tree” and we are anxiously awaiting the release of “Troubadour” on November 14th as well as the upcoming album tour.

“This record abandons the lament of my previous songs and takes more of a ‘get after it’ approach in the lyrics,” Perry admits. “Previous songs were about being in a place, mentally and physically, that I wanted to get out of, and this EP is full of songs just talking about doing it. There are callbacks to how life was, but these songs convey the struggle and desire of getting started and arriving at the place you want to be.”

Till the Well Runs Dry, produced by Brian Charles at Rare Signals in Cambridge, Massachusetts and led by glistening spring single “Count on You” and barnstorming summer banger “Tonight,” is the follow-up to the young band’s well-received 2024 debut EP The Otherside of Everything.

A honky-tonk hurricane from Philadelphia, the five-piece Outlaw Americana band has been called “a cowpunk miracle” by Country Universe and been compared to “Southern Culture on the Skids fronted by Laura Bell Bundy.” It’s Country, but you can hear the City.

Truth be told, we have been smitten with the authentic and one of a kind sound of Sam Varga for quite sometime and after hearing his latest gem , “Queen Of The Ashes” our admiration continues to grow.

The brooding, guitar-driven anthem tells the story of a woman who burns down her entire world in an attempt to get revenge on those who hurt her. Fueled by Varga’s signature emotional intensity, “Queen of the Ashes” channels the chaos and allure of self-destruction into something strikingly cat

“I had the title for a while and knew exactly who I wanted to write it with,” Varga shares. “Caroline [Romano] is an outstanding artist, and Spencer [Jordan] has been my best friend since I got to town—he’s the special sauce on so much great music coming out of Nashville and LA.” The trio wrote the song in a single night at Varga’s apartment before bringing it to producer Dan Swank (All Time Low, Knox, Taylor Acorn), who helped bring the vision to life in a quick-fire studio session.

Building on the sound he introduced with his 2024 debut album Shadow Work, Sam Varga continued to expand his vision with breakout singles like “Minute Man” and “Long Way Back.” Now, with “Queen of the Ashes,” he pushes even further, deepening his alt-country edge while preserving the raw vulnerability and urgency that set his music apart.

The well constructed backbeat on “Felt”, immediately got our attention. Wright’s vocal performance is an absolute thing of beauty , combined with the well formed melodies. Tiberius, have an instant hit on their hands.

confessional, yet conversational and relatable songwriting.

Commenting on the song, Wright shares:

“When I wrote Felt, I was fairly fresh out of a breakup and was spending a lot of time looking for distractions. Instead of tackling
some bigger questions and engaging in a healthy recovery, I was tucking away my feelings into compartments and distracting
myself with casual dating. I was spending some late nights slipping into the backstories of strangers’ lives – exhilarating, but
merely theatrical. It never eased the issue at hand. I was alone, and I was terrified to sit with that.“ – Brendan Wright (they/them)

It has been an absolute whirlwind for Nate Perry & Ragged Company, as of late .Boston Calling, over Memorial Day weekend, where they showcased several songs from a pair of EPs: last spring’s debut The Otherside of Everything, and the forthcoming Till The Well Runs Dry. They were also featured on WCVB’s Chronicle and CBS Boston /  WBZ-TV’s Road To Boston Calling special. 

Now they offer up the electrifying new single, “Tonight” Not only does “Tonight” lead off Nate Perry & Ragged Company’s new EP, set for release this summer, but it provides a slightly more aggressive feel than euphoric May single “Count on You”

Continuing to showcase the Boston collective’s blossoming spectrum of country- and roots-tinged alternative rock, “Tonight” cranks up the bluesy intensity and revs the band’s creative engine, with enough energy to appeal to the rock and roll scene and just enough twang to keep the Americana crowd honest.

“It was a fun song to write and it’s a fun song to play,” says vocalist, guitarist, and band leader Perry. “The creativity that went into the whole song really illustrates how much we’ve been cooking lately. This song is a reminder that this band can blow the roof of the building. It pulls us away from the traditional sound of Americana and towards a harder alt-rock sound while providing the raw rock and roll emotion that we’ve always delivered.”

“Tonight” is precisely the perfect musical jolt to send your summer into high gear. The next level musicianship from Nate Perry& Ragged Company , rises to the occasion to provide an absolute gem that will continue to shine long after the music fades .

“Tonight” has also emerged as a live favorite, just as the young band embraces a series of summer gigs. From there, the itinerary takes Nate Perry and the boys all around Massachusetts for the summer, performing live at the Veterans Rock Music Festival in Hyannis on July 19; the Bradford Common Music Series in Haverhill on July 31; Lobsterfest in Beverly on August 6; Levitate Backyard in Marshfield on August 23; and The Cut in Gloucester on September 20

Perry and the band – rounded out by Sam DeMello on drums; Connor Milligan on bass and backing vocals; Ollie Nash on keys and backing vocals; and Mike Chandler on lead guitar – get fired up every time “Tonight” comes up on the setlist. 

“It’s a blast,” he admits. “As soon as the count for the intro starts, we all get a shot of adrenaline and for the next few minutes the band runs wild. It comes out of the gate at full speed. It’s maybe our highest-energy song and the emotions behind it are unique to the rest of our work.” 

Whether live or on the recording, “Tonight,” which was produced by Brian Charles at Rare Signals in Cambridge, Massachusetts, tends to catch the listener by surprise and manages to hold interest through its nearly-four-minute duration, as an impassioned Perry unleashes his emotions as they roar out of the speakers.

Singles like “Brown Eyed Baby” and “In The Dirt” have already amassed millions of streams, demonstrating the anticipation amongst her fans for this full-length project. 

The one song that stood out to us on “Getting By” was the powerful almost hymn like “Made To Believe It” We literally had goosebumps the whole song – absolutely stunningly amazing.

“If listeners take anything from this album, let it be this: it’s okay to not have it all figured out, it’s okay to break, it’s okay to feel like you’re just surviving some days,” says Lily. “But even in the chaos, there’s still strength, there’s still beauty in being vulnerable, and there’s always a glimmer of hope that can pull you through.”

We are absolutely smitten with the latest single, “Everyone Else Disappears” , from Young Martyrs. There is a real honest authentic vibe from the track that leaped from the speakers in to our music loving soul.

Formed in 2020, Young Martyrs released their debut self-titled album that year. Their coinciding debut headline tour saw them sell out shows throughout the UK, which led to them sharing the stage with the likes of Badly Drawn Boy, The Hooziers and McFly, as well as playing slots at a variety of festivals including Glastonbury and Rock Oyster. Their second album ‘Time Is Not On Our Side’ was released in 2023, expanding their fanbase beyond the UK and saw them playing shows across New York City.

‘Everyone Else Disappears’ was produced with Sebastian Brice (Indefra Studios) at Real World Studios with additional recording by Ed Oleszko at Vintage Tone Factory. The track combines introspective lyrics and nostalgia-laden melodies, lyrically delving into the feelings surrounding unrequited love.

On the track’s subject matter, vocalist Tom Corneill explains, “These are the words of someone who’s been looking at the object of their affection for too long and from too far away. He wants to know what life would look like if they shared it, but it’s a dream that’s just too far away; Too many rules, too many people in the way. This is the song that spills out of him when it’s becoming too much. It’s the life you could have if only that person knew what was happening inside your head.”

Labrador, has crafted memorable and melodic gems on “My Version Of Desire” that are authentic and lasting.

As soon as we heard the opening chords on “Someday I Pay”, we were absolutely mesmerized. Labrador, has a style and sound that perfectly blends a rock / alt -country sound that is letter perfect.

Led by guitarist, singer, and songwriter Pat King, Labrador has been around for a handful of years — seen moves to a new city (Philadelphia), seen a handful of lineup changes (the band is now officially King, Will Hochgertel and Steve Kurtz), and an excellent full-length breakthrough in 2023’s Hold The Door For Strangers. As you might guess from the title, Strangers was an album about empathy, full of poignant character studies and patient witching-hour ruminations. 

“Dry June, and “A Favor To Someone”, are two solid tracks , that show off the next level musicianship of Labrador.

The title track, “My Version Of Desire “ in our opinion, is the best track on the album and is Labrador, at their absolute best.

Flawless vocals and brilliantly crafted melodies make “My Version Of Desire”, from Labrador, a must listen.

Sometimes when you a hear a particular song, it moves you in a way that you feel compelled to tell the universe. We most certainly feel this way about “Count On You” , from Nate Perry & Ragged Company.

Nate Perry & Ragged Company, embodies everything that is good about music , they write inspiring and well crafted songs combined with powerful and electrifying live performances. The band has a healthy slate of live performances coming up including, Boston Calling Music Festival across Memorial Day weekend. 

Just ahead of the festival gig on May 25, as well as appearances at Levitate Backyard (May 22), New England Americana Festival (June 28), and Veterans Rock Music Festival (July 19), and fresh off a sold-out show at The Fallout Shelter.

“Count On You” , is a shimmering anthem that glistens and glows as it canvasses a spectrum of Americana, alternative, pop, outlaw country, roots, and indie rock, the transformative “Count on You” details the importance of a partner to help navigate the rough waters that these days feel increasingly turbulent. Vocalist, guitarist, and band leader Nate Perry penned the track about personal relationships, and arrives on the eve of Boston Calling, just as Nate Perry & Ragged Company continue their rapid ascent following last year’s release of debut EP The Otherside of Everything. 

“‘Count on You’ is about finding your partner in life and running into hard times,” Perry admits. “Specifically, I wrote this song from the point of view of someone who is scared that their partner isn’t going to show up when it matters. The result is a song from the perspective of someone who needs you. The times are getting hard and we both need to show up in this kind of situation. It’s a call to arms.”  

“Count on You” is the effervescent first offering from a new EP set for release this summer, recorded with Brian Charles at Rare Signals in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The track opens a portal into a more grandiose sound and vision from the quintet, who retain the gritty Americana and roots rock sound at its core, but coat it in sonic layers that prevent it from being limited by our sense of genre or style. It’s emotional music for emotional times, written by one of Boston music’s most intriguing new voices.  

“Count On You”, is what happens when extraordinary musicians get together and create phenomenal music. We have been hanging on every note/ word.

We were immediately taken by the gorgeous and poignant melody that is beautifully presented with “Meaning To Disaster “

Billy Dodge Moody , takes the experience of a sudden tragic loss and is able to channel all of the emotions associated with that loss and craft his new single, a lush and sweeping ballad of cinematic indie folk-pop titled “Meaning to Disaster,” which hits the streams today (Friday, May 2.)

An expansive track that swirls around the heartfelt creative winds of Americana and pop-rock, offering a gorgeous type of grandeur that can only be revealed through a personal reflection, “Meaning to Disaster” is the first new music from Moody since his 2022 album Condition. It sets a dramatic tone for his forthcoming summer EP, Ephemera, the first in a series of EPs that will combine to form his next album, thematically centering around navigating chaos and finding clarity in life. 

Taking a theme of tragedy and looking back on both a life cut short and one privileged to carry on, Moody first penned the track back in 2021, more than 20 years after his friend’s passing from an unexpected heart attack. Like an old wound needing time to heal and a desire to create something beautiful out of pain, Moody was deliberate in how – and when – he wanted to bring the touching composition to listeners.

“It’s about the shock and confusion that comes with losing someone so young, and how that moment made me confront the brevity, chaos, and randomness of life,” Moody says. “The song grapples with the idea that life itself is inherently chaotic, and our purpose is to find a way to make sense of why we’re here – giving it some sense of purpose in the very short time we have.”

Moody took “Meaning to Disaster” to his trusted longtime producer, Brian Charles, who the artist worked with previously at Zippah Recording. After a 2021 fire displaced the Brighton studio, Moody and Charles recorded the track over the course of three years, first at Guilford Sound in Guilford, Vermont, with stops along the way at Mad Oak in Allston and The Record Co. in Boston,  before completing it at Charles’ freshly-minted Rare Signals in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Charles mixed and mastered the track, on which Moody performs vocals and guitar alongside Jon Chapman on drums, Sam Bouve on bass, and Tyler Simko on keyboards. Additional vocals were provided by Hannah Foxman.

Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners Have Uncorked A Magnificent Collection Of Music , With New Ep “Before The Fall”

the high-octane sextet, led by longtime Boston music scene veteran Kier Byrnes and the recipient of Americana Act of the Year at the 2024 New England Music Awards, unleashes the stunning new EP , Before The Fall , today, (Friday, April 4.) The spirited and feisty six-track EP, which blends a spectrum of subgenres that bridge alt-folk, gypsy punk, Celtic, old-school country, and whatever else, gets the proper release party treatment a week later at The Plough & Stars in Cambridge come April 11.

“My hope is to create a unique blend of music from genres I closely identify with; country, rock, Celtic and Bavarian folk music and turn it into something new that defies any genre,” says Byrnes. “You know the joke about what happens if you play a country song backwards – you get your car back, you get your woman back, and you get your dog back. My aim is to take a country song and turn it completely inside out.” 

The Before The Fall EP, fueled by potent lead single and opening track “White Russian,” continues a dynamic 2025 for the band, with no immediate signs of a slow down. In the Kettle Burners, co-vocalist and acoustic guitarist Byrnes is rounded out by lead guitarist and co-vocalist Dan DiBacco; accordion player Jason McGorty; washboard player Monica Sager; bassist Joe Miller; and drummer Brian Lilienthal. And the band just banged out seven live shows over a five-day stretch leading up to St. Patrick’s Day, celebrating their also-new In The Key of Guinness EP of Irish music with high-profile gigs at Harpoon Brewery, The Burren, and a massive 10-hour all-day holiday set at The Stockyard in Brighton.

Every song on , “Before The Fall” , felt more like a monumental musical event rather just an average song , we were literally hanging on every word and melody.

Remarkably, for a band with the Kettle Burners’ hustle and all-overdrive ambition, the tracks that make up Before The Fall were all written and recorded last summer, just ahead of the band’s appearance at Outlaw Music Fest in New Hampshire alongside Willie Nelson & Family, John Mellencamp, Charley Crockett, and others. A few weeks before the gig arrived, Byrnes suffered a tumble down a set of stairs, leaving him with severe injury to his legs and requiring surgery. Finishing the songs was placed on the back-burner, allowing Byrnes time to heal and giving the record its title, as the songs were all written Before The Fall.

With its title already ominous, the lyrical material reveals a slightly darker undercurrent than what the upbeat and zestful music would imply. 

“Some of my favorite country and folk songs are the ones where the music seems really nice and happy-go-lucky, but if you listen to the lyrics, it’s really gory and/or tragic,” admits Byrnes. “It’s fun to sing about darker stuff in an upbeat, energetic way.” 

We blissfully sang and danced our way through “Before The Fall” from Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners and truth be told we enjoyed every single minute of it. . “When The Money’s All Gone” , “Train’s Off The Rails and “Hurting or Helping “ are absolute gems that we are absolutely over the moon about . Flawless sing along vocals woven between memorable melodies make “Before The Fall” a collection of music to cherish forever. Our favorite track on “Before The Fall” , is without a doubt “Quarter-Life Crisis “ Everything about this song is “stop you in your tracks “ good.

Do yourself a solid and check out “Before The Fall” you certainly will not regret it.

The Will Call, deliver 9 well crafted gems on “Amnesia “ The band has a indie-rock sound that has a touch of alt country that really makes the band stand out .

The Will Call ( Monte Arnstam, drums and percussion. Marc Seedorf , bass and keys. Andrew Rush guitar and vocals) are a tight musical outfit, that display next level musicianship throughout, “Amnesia”

You really feel the energy from “Amnesia “ immediately with the driving opening track ,”Green Mountain Woman “, we love the alt -country- rock feel that had us moving almost instantly.

The Will Call, effortlessly deliver high quality and memorable tunes with the melodic and sonically pleasing “The Scrawl” ( the opening drum beat is freaking epic ) .

One thing that really stands out on “Amnesia”, from The Will Call, is the poetic brilliance that exists within the lyrics that were perfectly woven within the melodies . We found ourselves really digging into the lyrics on every track.

The title track, “Amnesia” is a stunning haunting musical composition that is beautifully constructed with a curious tone that lurks mysteriously throughout the track.

We heard influences of bands , such as Dinosaur Jr. and The Pixies . However , The Will Call have a style and vibe that honors their influences but it also shines the light on a fresh and original sound that is all their own

“Amnesia” , is the fourth album from The Will Call. The record was recorded at Greenfield’s 1357 Recording Studio.

We especially loved the closing track, “Song For Vincent Musetto” which of course is in reference to Vincent Musetto, who was an American newspaper editor  and film critic for the New York Post . Musetto, is perhaps best know for his headline “Headless body in topless bar” , which is brilliantly mentioned in the song .

Old Town Crier Delivers An Epic Collection Of Tunes With EP “Motion Blur”

Old Town Crier , is the solo project of multi instrumentalist, Jim Lough . Jim is best known for his bluegrass band, Riley Coyote.Lough, not only is a skilled musician but a long time advocate of the good fight. Half of the proceeds of “Motion Blur” go to Plymouth COPE Center at bamsi.org.

The EP. was originally recorded in the winter of 2004, a single cassette copy was made , lost , then found it twenty years later.

We were immediately enthralled with “Motion Blur”, Old Town Crier ( Jim Lough) has an honest and authentic sound and message that as a listener , you can’t help but connect with .

The opening track “Back Door” is a brilliant melody filled with alt-country feels and stunning punk sensibilities , which are woven perfectly within “stop you in your tracks “ perfect vocals.

The melody of “Rebecca” greets you like a smile from the prettiest girl at the dance . We must confess we hit repeat on this one many , many times.

The driving backbeat of “Country Boy” grabs your ears immediately. We love the musical energy on this one .

The EP, closes with the rousing,”Real Good Friend” , we found ourselves tapping along and singing to this well crafted gem almost instantly.

The town crier was used to make public announcements in the streets. Old Town Crier ( Jim Lough) artfully uses his voice and music to announce his views and thoughts in to the world, this is heard loud and clear on “Motion Blur”
