We recently had the extraordinary opportunity to check out Boston, based Jennifer Tefft & The Strange and their phenomenal cover of The Lumineers , “Salt and the Sea”

You can listen to “Salt and the Sea” Here

There are a few unwritten rules that sort of goes hand and hand with releasing a cover song . The first one , is that you should always try and honor the original version in the best way possible. The second is while not straying too far from the original, you have to make it your own.

Jennifer Tefft & The Strange have not only honored the original version of “Salt and The Sea “They have also have without question made it their own. They have also once again proven why they are one the most skilled and well put together group of musicians on the freaking planet.

The vocals on “Salt and The Sea”, literally gave us goosebumps, Jennifer Tefft, is in our opinion one of the best female rock vocalists in today’s musical landscape…. And her band is the notch that is way above top notch .

Jennifer shared,“We wanted to try our hand at a reinterpretation of someone else’s work. We’ve been playing this song live for a few months and it always gets a great response. Recording it allowed us to really dig into the song and get creative with the arrangement and parts “

Jennifer Tefft & The Strange’s music combines intense rhythms with unique guitar textures and vocals that wind easily from darkly ethereal to soaring anthems, creating their own brand of gritty-lush alternative rock. Along with Jenn on vocals, the band features longtime collaborator John Parrillo on guitar, Tim Provost on drums, and Stephen”Sharky” Beccia on bass and background vocals. The band released their new album Strange Beginnings, produced by Grammy award-winning Bob St. John in April of 2024, which garnered them an “Album Of The Year” award, as well asthree other nominations in the 2024 New England Music Awards, plus placement on “Best of 2024″ lists. We Are Over The Moon, For The Dollyrots Brilliant Cover Of “You Don’t Own Me”

November Tour with Bowling For Soup and Don’t Panic

We recently had the spectacular opportunity to check the magnificent cover of “You Don’t Own Me” via Wicked Cool Records, from beloved punk rock power trio The Dollyrots

You can listen to “You Don’t Own Me” Here.

You can watch the visualizer below

The mark of a great cover , is when the band stays true to original while at the same time adding their own vibe . The Dollyrots , certainly accomplished this with “You Don’t Own Me”

At a time when empowerment anthems are more needed than ever, the band is releasing a rousing, punked-up cover of Lesley Gore’s feminist classic “You Don’t Own Me.” The song was the idea of labelmate Brian Ray (Etta James, Paul McCartney), who co-produced and contributed guitar parts to the track.

Photo: Jen Rosenstein

The song is an anthem for female empowerment, about willing to be defiant in the face of something that’s just plain wrong. Sadly, it’s still just as timely as when Lesley sang it over 60 years ago,” shared singer/bassist Kelly Ogden.

With their signature mix of sugar-rush melodies, punk grit, and bubblegum sneer, The Dollyrots breathe new fire into Lesley Gore’s classic “You Don’t Own Me.” It’s part candy-coated chaos, part fist-in-the-air rebellion—hook-laden guitars collide with Kelly Ogden’s unmistakable voice, equal parts sweet and savage. More than a cover, it’s a technicolor punk anthem that channels the band’s playful heart and fearless bite—reminding us that freedom and fun can both be loud.

In addition, a limited-edition evergreen vinyl 7-inch single featuring the high-energy original track “Get On This Ride” and “You Don’t Own Me” is out now. The vinyl and an exclusive bundle—including the 7-inch, a t-shirt, and a sticker—are available exclusively at The Dollyrots Store and on tour while supplies last.

Fronted by Kelly Ogden (bass/vocals) and Luis Cabezas (guitar/vocals), with Simon Hancock on drums, The Dollyrots continue to deliver their infectious blend of attitude, melody, and heart that has become their signature sound.

The Dollyrots are hitting the road this November for a run with Bowling For Soup and Don’t Panic, culminating in a set at Vans Warped Tour in Orlando, FL. Tickets available HERE.

Tomás Doncker Releases An Absolute Masterpiece With A Brilliantly Soulful Reworking Of Motörhead’s “Ace Of Spades”

Tomás Doncker is pleased to reveal that his upcoming EP ‘Hard Is Hard’ is set for release July 4th 2025

We recently had the amazing opportunity to check out the stunningly perfect and soulful cover of “Ace Of Spades” from NYC-based alternative-R&B producer, singer, songwriter and indie label CEO Tomás Doncker. You can listen to “Ace Of Spades” on Spotify Here , Apple Music Here

Tomás Doncker has long been a prime mover on the New York music, arts and culture scenes. From the early 1980s, as a member of groundbreaking No Wave and Punk Funk bands The Contortions and Defunkt, international touring, recording and songwriting collaborations with luminaries such as Bootsy Collins, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ivan Neville, The Specials and the legendary Ms. Patti Smith, to helming his own band, The True Groove All-Stars, Tomás has established himself as a cross-genre innovator without peer.

Discussing his decision to cover the single he explains, “Motörhead… Lemmy…Ace of Spades. Who doesn’t love this song? I have since I first heard it many lifetimes ago. A few years back, I was in a car and it came on the radio – and it spoke to me in a very different way than it ever had before. This was the moment when the idea of covering it popped into my head. When I read the lyrics, it became clear to me what it was that was tugging at me…The Blues. I realised that Motörhead had changed the spirit of Son House, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and the Delta Blues storytelling tradition and sped it up to create one of the quintessential rock and roll anthems of all time. It became obvious that I had to sing this song. I saw myself in it.”

We blissfully basked in the absolute soulful perfection of the phenomenal version of “Ace Of Spades”, from Tomás Doncker

The upcoming EP Hard Is Hard’ was produced with James Dellatacoma (Bill Laswell, Herbie Hancock) and mastered by Michael Fossenkemper (Paul Weller, LL Cool J, Miles Davis) and includes guest instrumentation from Frank Benbini (UB40, Fun Lovin’ Criminals), Adriano Rossetti-Bonell (UB40) and The Specials Horns. With elements of soul, blues, funk, rock and some jazz thrown in for good measure, Hard Is Hard’ is a five-track masterclass in Doncker’s innate knack for genre fluidity. The EP lyrically explores themes of racial inequality, social injustice and keeping a positive mental attitude through hard times.

Doncker was recently invited to support Fun Lovin’ Criminals on their extensive tour throughout the UK and Europe alongside his band, The True Groove All-Stars, which include members of The Specials Horns.

On the tour, he says, I’m so honoured, and excited to have been invited to be a part of the upcoming Fun Lovin’ Criminals fall UK/EU tour. They’ve really made me feel welcome as a member of the international / UK music community, and I am forever grateful for this opportunity. It’s gonna be a lot of fun for sure!

The Chelsea Curve Give Us Double The Musical Magic With A New double A-side single

Boston mod-pop trio pair rousing rendition of Mickey Lee Lane’s ‘60s stomper ‘Hey Sah-Lo-Ney’ with Andy Lewis’ fiery remix of ‘Jamie C’mon’

Since the Boston mod-pop trio last dropped new music, almost exactly two years ago, the unexpected happened: Beloved label boss and confident Justine Covault of Red on Red Records suddenly passed away; bassist and vocalist Linda Pardee was diagnosed with breast cancer; and founding drummer Ron Belanger amicably left the group to relocate to North Carolina, leaving Pardee and guitarist Tim Gillis without a beat to guide them.

So what’s a band to do? Regroup, reload, and get back on the scene. And call Boston music veteran and stylish gentleman Bruce Caporal to hop behind the kit and fill the role as the new drummer.

The Chelsea Curve’s new beat begins today, (Friday, May 16, ) when they make their Rum Bar debut and launch the double A-side single featuring a rousing rendition of Mickey Lee Lane’s 1965 Northern soul stomper “Hey Sah-Lo-Ney” and a fiery Andy Lewis remix of 2022 single “Jamie C’Mon.” The upbeat tracks hit the streams ahead of the 7-inch arriving in July on Mod Glass Clear or Sharp Suit Black vinyl

The Chelsea Curve celebrate the night of the streaming release with a party at Faces Brewing Co. in Malden alongside Yes Nanny and Rum Bar labelmates Diablogato.

It’s been a while, and we’re raring to get back at it!,” says Gillis. Pardee agrees with her usual enthusiasm: “We’re ready to go, baby!”

For some, especially on the live circuit, The Chelsea Curve never went away, staying sharp through select live shows, including brief stateside tours with British brethren Sharp Class and Norway’s The Cocktail Slippers, and a jaunt over to England to bring their ultra-stylized energy and sound to an appearance at the 45th anniversary of Mods Mayday in London

The gritty and shout-along “Hey Sah-Lo-Ney” first debuted when The Chelsea Curve played The High Rollers scooter rally in Las Vegas back in 2023, and the response from the assembled crowd of British and American scooterists confirmed they captured the song’s true spirit. And now it gets the proper recorded treatment, providing another extension of the band bridging the gap and entrenching a cultural connection across the Atlantic. Plus, hey, it’s a total belter.

This one’s a little different for us, more of a rock and soul groove,” says Gillis. “On this one, we wanted to keep some of the roughness and rawness of the original but put our own mark on it, and I think we did that. It’s a great showcase for Linda’s vocals – she really sings the hell out of it.”

Adds Pardee: “I came across this classic Northern soul number a while back and instantly loved it. I love that this song is from a time when rock and roll still seemed kind of dangerous and maybe even ‘forbidden’. The lyrics are raw; they’re an ecstatic proclamation, frenzied… slightly out of control. The call and response makes you want to sing along. The pounding beat makes you want to dance. It’s all so very primal.”

And it makes a perfect companion track to Lewis’ remix of “Jamie C’Mon,” fueled by the English producer, musician, and DJ’s sonic enhancements, which includes super cool bells and whistles, rhythm tracks, extra keyboards, and a good dose of fairydust. It also features The Chelsea Curve Mod Squad: Rod Spark on keyboards; Dan Levine on trombone; and Jay Webb on trumpet. It’s an instant party-starter.

I wanted to do a Northern soul style dance remix of ‘Jamie C’Mon’, and asked our Mod Squad keyboardist, Rod Spark, who could make that happen,” Pardee offers up. “Without hesitation, he said Andy Lewis – he’s played in Paul Weller’s band and DJ’d on the Blur Parklife tour, so his creds were a perfect fit! Rod connected Andy and us, and that was that!”

You can check out “Hey Sah-Lo-Ney Here and Jamie C’Mon ( Andy Lewis Remix) Here

The Chelsea Curve, is everything we love about music and then some. We love the Northern Soul, vibe with Hey Sah-Lo-Ney’, and “Jamie C’Mon ( Andy Lewis Remix)

A new drummer, a clean bill of health for Pardee, a new label, a new 7-inch, a newly-minted Bandcamp page, and a healthy slate of live shows positions The Chelsea Curve back at full operational speed, with Covault’s cherished memory and constant support not far from their collective hearts. New music is fast on the way this summer, a string of singles leading to either a new EP or new album around the turn of the calendar, and the crew is headed back to England for summer shows with Sharp Class and The Len Price 3. The run also includes a gig on the Isle of Wight for the world’s largest  scooter rally.

The Chelsea Curve, have the groove you need, so do yourself a favor and check it out.

We have forever said that the true mark of a great cover, is when a band takes a song and makes it their own. The Disassociates, have most definitely achieved this with their cover of SZA’s , “Kill Bill”

The group burst onto the map with their 2024 debut album, No Reason This Can’t Be Fun—an explosive fusion of rock subgenres, layered with clever, boundary-pushing lyrics and irresistibly catchy melodies. Since its release, the album has garnered critical acclaim and captivated a growing fanbase.

Their newest release—an amped-up take on SZA’s darkly addictive hit—brings their signature edge to a song already rich in drama.

“‘Kill Bill’ was begging to be a rock song,” the band shares. “SZA’s incredible lyrics are all about revenge, pettiness, violence, madness—a lot of themes we cover in our original music, so we were extremely drawn to this song. And it’s a Tarantino reference!? Come on—that’s so punk and dramatic—we live for it. The original was so beautiful, we just knew we had to make a high-energy mess of SZA’s masterpiece.”

With an electrifying live show ( to go along with their electrifying sound) , the band has toured extensively across California, Portland, and beyond, steadily building their reputation as a must-see act. They’ve shared the stage with legends like Fishbone, Swingin’ Utters, The Meteors, The Last Gang, and The Drowns, proving they can hold their own alongside some of the best in the scene.

Beyond the music, Tess & The Details take pride in their relentless work ethic and advocacy for mental health awareness—all while delivering the kind of no-frills, high-energy rock that keeps fans coming back for more.

The band has teamed up with, Wiretap Records for a cover of Maniac”, along with fresh original music and an aggressive touring schedule.

The idea to cover Maniac came unexpectedly— Lead vocalist/guitarist Tess Stevens says , “We were loading out at an obscure little venue in Crockett, California called Toot’s Tavern, and over the speakers while we were lugging our Marshall’s out the door we heard the song and we all started dancing.

It was the energy and dark catchiness of the song that made us all go…wait…,”Should we cover this?” almost as a joke…then that joke turned into us coming up with a Details-ified version of the song that we have played at almost every show since. Crowds liked it so much that we ended up teaming up with our longtime producer & mixing engineer Jacob Light to record it at ModernTone Studios in Lafayette, California.”

They didn’t stop there. To fully embrace the Flashdance spirit, they threw themselves into a nostalgic, over-the-top music video, directed by their close friend and Like Roses guitarist Devin Zamora. The result? A wild, 1983-inspired spectacle that you truly have to see to believe. You can watch the video Here

Chelsea Spear’s lo-fi ukulele-pop project releases a fully licensed cover of the Sparks classic on today (September 6th) with the video to soon follow

We recently had the breathtaking experience to listen to the new single “Tryouts For The Human Race , from Travels With Brindle .

Travels With Brindle is the lo-fi ukulele pop project from Massachusetts songwriter and artist Chelsea Spear. “Tryouts For The Human Race” is the fully licensed cover of Sparks’ ‘70s classic tune. You can listen to “Tryouts For The Human Race “ Here and on Bandcamp Here .

Chelsea Spear is an artist in every sense of the word . Travels With Brindle is an artistic lens that Spear uses to artfully bring meaningful stories to life. Chelsea Spear elegantly adds a wonderful new perspective on “Tryouts For The Human Race “ from Sparks.

Recorded at the Boston Public Library, “Tryouts For The Human Race” kicks off a bit of a Sparks era for Spear, as it not only serves as the follow-up to last year’s literary-minded Notes From Undergrad album, but sets the tone for her latest covers record, a ukulele and banjolele reimagining of Sparks’ entire Georgio Moroder-produced disco album “No. 1 in Heaven”, due next year.

One of the things that hit me about Sparks is how effective they are at pastiche and at making genres their own,” says Spear. “It feels like they learn the rules of a genre just so they can subvert them. The fact that Sparks inspire such strong feelings among their fanbase also lends itself well to cover songs – you can hear the joy in the recording.”

The track’s vocals were engineered by Spear’s longtime trusted collaborator Joel Edinberg, with ukulele arrangement by Sage Harrington and mastering by Josh Cohen. Spear helmed the ukulele recording and track mixing, and Catherine Maddux supplied the textured sleeve cover art.

Spear says the effort put in, both for “Tryouts For The Human Race” and the forthcoming record, was worth the time and investment.

“Tryouts For The Human Race “ from Travels With Brindle is a beautiful example of how artistic interpretation can give joyous new life to a classic.
