Be Prepared To Be Absolutely Mystified By Sergeant Thunderhoof’s Sensational New Album “The Ghost Of Badon Hill” which, is out today. ( November 15th)
We recently had the opportunity to check out the amazing new folklore inspired concept album from rock five-piece Sergeant Thunderhoof, “The Ghost Of Badon Hill”
You can check out my new album on Spotify Here , Apple Music Here and on Bandcamp Here
Coming from the historical area of Somerset (UK) Sergeant Thunderhoof have yet again delved deep into local history, mythology and folklore to deliver their most focussed album to date. “The Ghost of Badon Hill” is a true conceptual piece, set in the 4th Century AD and positively charged with raw emotion and Arthurian mysticism. Recorded with Josh Gallop (who recently became an official member of the band) at Stage 2 Studios in Bath and mastered by Tony Reed (Mos Generator), their new LP sees the band exploring wider and more textured sonic landscapes, whilst conceptually delving into Somerset’s famous Battle of Badon.
We were literally hanging on every note and word on “The Ghost Of Badon Hill” Sergeant Thunderhoof have created an absolute masterpiece.
Discussing the lyrical themes explored throughout the album vocalist and lyricist Dan Flitcroft says: “This new album feels to me like our most focussed and thoughtful release to date. In the past we’ve not had any limitations when it comes to song lengths and structures as we didn’t have a label calling the shots. But one thing that I knew was needed for this album was to set some boundaries. Foremost of which was the ability to get it onto two sides of vinyl, as opposed to us having to put most of our previous works onto double packages due to the sheer length of the songs.
“So, knowing that we only had 22 minutes or so per side to play with, it forced us to take the songs we had been jamming and sort the wheat from the chaff. Anything that felt unnecessary or superfluous was scrapped, with every moment on the record needing to justify its own place. I came across the theme for the album by sheer accident when out walking with my family. I had no idea that Bath was a possible location for a real-life battle between the Britons and invading Anglo Saxons, on what was known as Badon Hill. There are a few prominent hills in and around our city that have been suggested as possible locations, famously Peter Gabriel sang about Solsbury Hill many years ago, and that is such a special and romantic place to visit”.
Sergeant Thunderhoof does a brilliant job in bringing this epic tale to life . Highlighted by otherworldly vocals and spectacular melodies, “The Ghost Of BadonHill “ is destined to become an instant classic.
From the breathtaking beginning of “Badon” , the memorable single “Blood Moon” and the mysteriously beautiful “Sentinel “- “The Ghost Of Badon Hill is an absolute can’t miss.

We recently had the stellar opportunity to check out the new single “Long Way To Go” from legendary Arizona punk rock band Authority Zero. You can listen to “Long Way To Go” Here
Not only are we getting a killer new single from Authority Zero, but the band is marking its 30th anniversary with the release of a new six-song EP titled Thirty Years: Speaking to the Youth, set to launch on November 1st.
On the new single “Long Way To Go” , frontman Jason DeVore says, “We’ve all been congested. We’ve all been broken at some point, and we’ve all been striving for a better day, every day. Unfortunately that doesn’t just magically happen. It takes work, it takes courage, and it takes consistency. Without that you’ll keep tripping up and taking steps backwards. It’s about realizing that if you change nothing, then nothing changes, so why would you not expect the same result time after time? You can’t just keep trying to convince yourself that everything’s fine and keep turning a blind eye to it, when you know it’s clearly not if you want change. Inner battles, social or political adversity, you name it. It will all just keep repeating itself until you start to recognize that a different approach is necessary. Even then, you’ve got a long way to go, and that is just the beginning.”
Authority Zero is one of those bands that absolutely brings it on every single song and, “Long Way To Go” is no exception. We are super excited for the new EP on November First .
We recently had the opportunity to check out the new single “The Ballad Of The Washed Up(and Seemingly Forgotten) from Massachusetts alternative rock band, The Brother Stereo. You can listen to The Ballad Of The Washed Up (and Seemingly Forgotten) on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here and on Bandcamp Here
There is something very organic and authentic about the new single “The Ballad Of The Washed Up ( and Seemingly Forgotten) from The Brother Stereo that makes the song so appealing. The message that the song tells about the struggles and pitfalls of those who struggle in Hollywood is a bit ironic. Because, “The Ballad Of The Washed Up (and Seemingly Forgotten) is a song that deserves its place on the silver screen.
“The Ballad of the Washed Up (and Seemingly Forgotten),” marks the third effort from the Massachusetts alternative rock band, led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Robert Kelly, the brother of longtime Dropkick Murphys drummer Matt Kelly, and the Boston punk band’s substitute touring bass, banjo, and mandolin player, following punchy spring debut “After The Rain” and summer’s aching “Time in History.”
An upbeat tune for downtrodden times, “TheBallad of the Washed Up (and Seemingly Forgotten)” continues to expand The Brother Stereo’s expansive sonic landscape, building upon a foundation of indie, psychedelia, post-Britpop, and guitar-driven space rock, but also taking the sound to unexpected places. It comes across as oddly timeless, a notion at playful odds with its storyline.
“It’s about being at the top of your game and being a human under a lot of pressure,” Kelly says. “It’s about the superficiality of the people you meet, keeping up the facade of fame in the eyes of the world and trying to relate to others.”
“The Ballad of the Washed Up (and Seemingly Forgotten)” was written, recorded, produced, and engineered by The Brother Stereo; mixed by Trevor Buckingham; and mastered by Jay Frigoletto at MastersuiteStudio in Brookline, New Hampshire, just over the Massachusetts state line where Pelkey and Kelly grew up together.
“The Ballad Of The Washed Up (and Seemingly Forgotten) by The Brother Stereo is a songwriting and musical feat that needs to heard and celebrated.
We recently had the amazing opportunity to check out progressive folk rock trio, The Trouble Notes and their breathtaking brilliant new single “Storm Searching “ You can listen to “Storm Searching “ on Spotify Here and on AppleMusic Here You check out the video below
The band was formed in 2013 by violinist Bennet Cerven and has since become renown in the international world folk scene. The band’s core hails from three different continents: AmericanviolinistBennet Cerven, German guitarist Florian Eisenschmidt and AustraliandrummerJulian Lardis. Their shows are packed full of surprises, known to feature international guest performers, adding to the energetic worldly sounds at the heart of their repertoire. They have toured extensively in Europe and North America.
Storm Searching” takes the listener on a captivating journey. The track is part of their upcoming 2025 album, a narrative-driven exploration of heroes facing inner and outer challenges, navigating personal transformation, and overcoming adversity. With its sub-octave guitar, full drum kit, and psychedelic undertones reminiscent of Jethro Tull (with whom the band performed in 2023), “Storm Searching” pushes the boundaries of The Trouble Notes’ signature sound.
The Trouble Notes are a massive breath of fresh air in today’s musical landscape. The Trouble Notes are master musicians as well as master showmen. We were blown away by “Storm Searching” and we have a feeling they are just getting warmed up .
We recently had the privilege and honor of checking out the amazing new single #Vote (RockThe Vote) via Rum Bar Records from Girl With A Hawk .A Joan Hathaway directed video arrives October 9th . You can listen to #Vote (Rock The Boat) on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here
We have always said that great bands can play any style of music. Girl With A Hawk is without question a great band and while they normally bring the rock, they have brilliantly delivered an absolute folk/Americana gem with their magnificent new single #Vote (Rock The Vote)
The message of getting out and voting is without a doubt, one of great importance . Linda Viens delivers a powerful and inspiring vocal performance that is coupled with guest collaborator Jim Fitting of Treat Her Right and Session Americana who gives the track a little extra soul .
The track was first penned by the veteran Boston musician and songwriter 20 years ago when George W. Bush was running for reelection against Massachusetts’ own John Kerry. Now, two decades later, with the Democratic ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz setting their sights on the White House, Viens brought the bones of the track to her Girl with a Hawk bandmates to resurrect its sound and sentiment for what’s shaping up to be the most important election in our lifetimes.
Not since the Civil War has preserving our democracy been so crucially dependent on the American people being active, and voting, as it is right now,”Viens says. “We have to fight as hard as we can for the Harris/Walz ticket, and I hope the song inspires people to recognize the power they hold to affect change and move our country forward. That said, I believe in democracy, and if a candidate I don’t like wins an election fair and square, then the people have spoken.”
In the song, the band is mindful to not be preachy or persuasive in convincing a person to vote one way or another. They just want to get every American man, woman, and person to the voting booth on Election Day.
“The lyrics of ‘#VOTE’ retain a kind of neutrality,” she adds, “in that ‘sides’ are not taken, there is no reference to ‘right’ or ‘left’. But we hope the video underscores the political and cultural ethos inherent in the lyrics in a more direct way; emphasizing the ideas of liberty, justice and freedom for all. We also hope that the video brings a smile, and reflects a collective faith in a world that is more diverse, inclusive, and ultimately joyful, because people are free to choose who they want to be and how they want to live. My work has always been about creating loving and supportive communities, where we lift each other up, think and act for the common good, and lend a helping hand. For me there is no greater way to bring humans together than through the power of music!”
In addition to the enlisting of Fitting on harmonica, “#Vote (Rock The Boat)” brings Girl with a Hawk together in a new capacity and configuration, with Viens on lead vocals, guitar, and backing vocals; Daniel Coughlin on slide guitar and backing vocals; and Richard Lamphear, Dan Bernfeld, and Nancy Delaney all contributing backingvocals, taking a breather from their usual efforts on keyboards, bass, and drums, respectively. The track was co-produced by Lamphear and Viens.
Girl with a Hawk perform acoustically at a Harris/Walz fundraiser at Crystal Ballroom in Somerville on October 10.
Music is a very powerful medium and it is also the perfect medium to get out the importance of voting. Girl With A Hawk beautifully does their part with #Vote (Rock The Vote)
Sometimes when you hear certain songs they just hit in a way that stop you dead in your tracks. This is absolutely the case with “Body Bag” from Nashville based alt-pop singer & songwriter Caroline Romano .
We are absolutely mesmerized by “Body Bag” from Caroline Romano.
Produced by and co-written with Danen Reed Rector (Charlotte Sands, Boys Like Girls, Betty Who), “Body Bag” is a song about growing up and coming to terms with the harsh realities of life.
On “Body Bag,”Caroline’s dreamy indie-pop vocals float over a sea of fuzzy guitars, rousing percussion, and sparkling synths. In a similar vein to recent singles like “Doesn’t Matter” and “Used By You,” “Body Bag” is another stunning showcase of Caroline’s ability to transform her raw emotions into anthemic bliss.
“I always had this picture in my mind of who I would be at this age and what my life would look like, and I always thought it would be shiny, fun, sexy, and exhilarating,” says Caroline. “I’ve spent the last few years chasing those feelings, but ‘Body Bag’ is a peak behind the curtain at the reality of modern romance and feeling young and old at the same time. I think sonically the song has so many ups and downs, and that’s exactly how this stage of my life has felt. It’s running barefoot on the concrete, chasing something you can’t quite put your finger on, but running towards it nonetheless. That’s how I would best describe ‘Body Bag.’”

At just 22-years-old, Caroline Romano has established herself as a versatile artist, effortlessly transitioning between misty-eyed ballads and fiery alt-rock anthems. Since the release of her 2022 debut album, Oddities and Prodigies, and her subsequent 2023 EP, A Brief Epic, Caroline has continued to come into her own as an artist, revealing new layers of her artistry with each release.
We are simply enthralled with the beautiful, frantic and vibrant energy that surrounds “Body Bag” from Caroline Romano . It has been an absolute treat to watch her evolve as an artist. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
We recently had the opportunity to check out the sophomore EP “Everything’s Still” from rising pop singer & songwriter Paulina. You can listen to “Everything’s Still” Here
Across the EP’s 3 songs, “stranger,” “funny (interlude),” and “a song I wrote,”Paulina opens up about an emotionally resonant breakup she went through.
There is something very personal and moving about “Everything’s Still “ from Paulina. It very like we were reading entries from a diary. Paulina,is a gifted and talented songwriter who writes brilliant songs from the heart.
The title of my EP, ‘everything’s still,’ was inspired by one of my favorite Noah Kahan songs, ‘The View Between Villages,’” she says. “The closing line of the song, ‘and everything’s still,’ really resonated with me. It feels so uplifting, like it’s the moment you can finally breathe again. That’s how making this EP made me feel; I wanted to embody that feeling.”
The EP kicks off with the dark and sultry lead single, “stranger,” which grapples with her initial heartbreak and the phenomenon that the person you once loved has now become a stranger. The second track, “funny (interlude),” sees Paulina wading through the emotional whiplash of the breakup, slowly picking up the pieces of her shattered heart. She emerges with a sense of bittersweet resolution on the EP’s closing track, “a song I wrote.”
The final song on the EP is about questioning whether or not the person still thinks about you,” she says. “And it’s the realization that even if they don’t admit it, you know there will always be things that remind them of you — like the song you wrote that you know they’ll be listening to. It’s a sassy, mic drop conclusion to the breakup story.”
Paulina is the solo pop project of Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter Paulina Ella Levitan. Born and raised in Long Island, New York, her love for music was sparked at a young age. She was classically trained in piano starting at the age of 8 and grew up performing in musical theater productions. After taking a songwriting summer camp in high school, Paulina decided to dive headfirst into making music her full-time career and enrolled at the University of Miami’s esteemed Frost School of Music.
“Everything’s Still” from Paulina is a collection of songs that will touch your heart and soul.
We recently had the amazing opportunity to check out the new single “You’ve Got That Edge” from Urban Heat .
You can listen to “You’ve Got That Edge” on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here
Post-punk darkwave underground faves Urban Heat absolutely slay with their latest single “You’ve Got That Edge “ which is from their upcoming album “The Tower” due on August 16th .
Credit Cathlin McCullough
Urban Heat artfully fusion of electronic and post-punk styles with an uncanny ability to write undeniably universal drop intoxicating hooks, the Austin-based band gives incredible and rousing performance, too – they’re currently on an extensive US Summer tour, which will be followed by a European tour with Molchat Doma in the fall.
Lead singer Jonathan Horstmann says of the upcoming single, “This track is for anyone who looks in the mirror and doesn’t feel like the reflection is a good representation of who they really are… We wanted to remind anyone who feels isolated that they are a force of nature.
This was the first song written for The Tower (their upcoming album out August 16th), and sonically it gave us permission to go to so many places. The verse is very synthpop but we bring in big guitars with a halftime breakdown. It’s a damn anthem. So many of our songs are about anxiety and fear and pain and it seems right to have something that feels so supportive emotionally to get everyone ready for the rest of the record. ‘Cause the rest of it hurts, lol.”

We absolutely love everything about Urban Heat and their latest single “You Got That Edge “ Urban Heat , is a prime example of a band who isn’t afraid to bring a fresh inventive style and sound to a somewhat mundane musical landscape.

We recently had the opportunity to check out “Red Dress” from Chicago based Deadbeat Daycare. You can checkout “Red Dress” Here
At first listen Deadbeat Daycare reminded us of one of favorite bands, who are also from Chicago- The Smoking Popes . Deadbeat Daycare has a unique sound, there are elements of punk , hardcore and a dash of alt -pop. No matter how you slice it Deadbeat Daycare definitely standout in a sometimes mundane musical landscape.
The musicianship in Deadbeat Day is rock solid, lead by the dynamic and fresh vocals and rhythm guitar of Joaquin Braganza coupled with Ethan Nelson’s lead guitar prowess,Bobby Baldwin’s relentless drumming, andDanWright’s solid bass lines ,make Deadbeat Daycare an unstoppable musical force who are ready to make their mark.
“Red Dress” is a catchy and well written song that stays with you long after the music fades ( We may or may not have sung along at the top of our lungs in the drive-thru)

From intimate venues to iconic stages, they’ve left their mark on Chicago’s music scene, with memorable shows at Brudders‘ and Bassline Chicago among their many triumphs. Brooklyn based post-punk outfit Clone brilliantly and artfully test the boundaries of music and sound on their new LP “CL.1”via Portland label Little Cloud Records and North Carolina’s 5BC Records , and we love every single minute of it.
“CL.1” is a record makes you immediately take notice . Clone is hardly a musical clone they have a vibe and sound that is uniquely their own.
The album opens with the well crafted gem “Room Of Tears” we found ourselves hanging on every word. The vocal performance on “RoomOf Tears “ is absolutely stunning.
We found ourselves instantly drawn to “Dazzler” by the chorus we were eagerly singing along . Single, “Divided Line” shows a band that is in sync and on point .
Every song on “CL.1” is excututed with absolute perfection. However, if we had to pick a favorite it would be “Insides” Clone absolutely brings everything they have on this track and boy does it show – Bravo
Recorded and mixed by NYC legendary producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans, Brian Eno, Herbie Hancock, Iggy Pop, Helmet) at the famed BC Studio, built with BRIAN ENO. New Album ‘Self-Maintenance’ Out April 12th, 2024 via SBÄM Records
We recently had the amazing opportunity to check out the new single “My Favourite Place” via SBÄM Records from Munich based Cadet Carter, featuring Kayleigh Goldsworthy
You can listen to “My Favourite Place” Here You can also watch the video below
As of late the Pop Punk sound has definitely found its way back into mainstream music. While Munich based Cadet Carter consider themselves very much part of this genre, their sound is much closer to the likes of Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday than it is to artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Mod Sun and Avril Lavigne
The Munich-based band, fronted by Welsh lead singer Nick Sauter, has made quite an impact on the European music scene since starting out in late 2017. Their 2020 album Perceptions made it to #14 on the European Alternative Rock chart, and before the pandemic stopped all touring, the band played a ton of shows supporting artists like Touché Amoré, The Dangerous Summer, Stand Atlantic and As December Falls.
We absolutely love the latest single “My Favourite Place from Cadet Carter “ featuringKayleigh Goldsworthy. When the two join forces the results are absolutely stunningly brilliant.

CADET CARTER’s brand-new album Self-Maintenance, their first release with Austria-based Punk Rock label SBÄM will be out on April 12th. The new record is a collection of songs bursting with catchy melodies, clever arrangements, and heartfelt lyrics. “All these songs are like little odes to taking care of yourself and focusing on what’s good in life rather than letting the more gloomy side of your character win“, says Nick.
We are so excited for the new album! In the mean we will keep hitting repeat on “My Favourite Place.
Thank god for Philadelphia based rockers SORAIA and their absolutely killer new single “Bang Them Bones via Wicked CoolRecords. SORAIA and their epic new single have kick our Friday to new heights. – much appreciated
Frontwoman ZouZou Mansour said, “We love recording while we’re touring in Sweden–and have done so every time we go. It always feels like we’re just a little more “beat up” mid-way through our tours there, so it’s a good time to get some honest representation of ourselves recorded. This one was another song written by Sulo (Sören Karlsson, frontman of Swedish rock band The Diamond Dogs). We immediately love how it reminded us of a 60s/70s rock anthem. The title can be interpreted in so many ways, too–which we love writing our own songs in that style, and often, Sulo’s style complements our songwriting in that way. This time, we recorded in a new-to-us recording studio–which keeps things fresh and fun for us.”

First of all “4th Wall” from Blowfuse, is the kind of record that make people fall in love with Punk Rock . Theband has crafted an absolutely flawless collection of incredible songs .
The 4th Wall” is a look into Blowfuse’s naked mind. Its enigmatic cover art reflects a concept rather than just an image: the prison of perspective. The band’s new album aims to remind both the listener and the members themselves that freedom is a pendulum that swings between denial and acceptance. Side to side, relentless. And in that constant swinging we build the foundations of our identity from a young age. As an exercise in introspection, Blowfuse’s fourth album is, at its core, about hope. The hope that one day, each one of us will rise up and break out of our own prisons.
And when that happens, we will realize that the walls of our cells were just a matter of perspective. Taking this into consideration, it is logical that the band has defied all the genres previously associated with it. However, one thing is clear: energy and vitality are two adjectives Blowfuse will never be able to get rid of.
There is so many different vibes and sounds that are present on “4th Wall” Blowfuse mainly a punk band beautifully shows off their versatility with “4th Wall”
From the opening note of “Move On “ you can’t help but hopelessly fall in love with the perfect melodies of Blowfuse.
There honestly isn’t a bad song anywhere to be found on “4th Wall” “Wish”, “I Give You My Word”, are all well written songs that make “4th Wall” an epic listening experience.
Recorded at Music Lan Studi (Girona), EM Estudi (Terrassa) and Amplifire Studio (Barcelona) and mixed by Jason Livermore of The Blasting Room (CO, US) and mastered by Brian Gardner (US), the album is available on Sbäm Records (AU), HFMN CREW (SP),Infected Records (PT) and Epidemic Records (IT). We are all in on Blowfuse and their magnificent new record “4th Wall”
We have one question that came to mind while listening to the new single “Vampire” from Boston rock legends Nervous Eaters…. Whatever Nervous Eaters are doing we don’t want them to stop …. They sound absolutely amazing. We were first introduced to Nervous Eaters in our youth ( so we’ve been fans for a while ) But…. “Vampire” (b/w “Knockdown Day”) which is out via the fine folks at Wicked Cool Record is a freaking masterpiece.
You can listen to “Vampire” and (b/w “Knockdown Day”) Here and you can watch the video for “Vampire” below
Boston rock pioneers Nervous Eaters return with another new single, “Vampire,” which offers up plenty of sharp hooks and jangly guitars. B-side “Knockdown Day” is a slower-tempo track that evokes feelings of longing and reflection.
Founding member and front man Steve Cataldo sets the scene for “Vampire”: “In a once vibrant town, business by day, swinging by night, always had its own unique rhythm. Strange and without reason, the pace of the small bustling California borough, somehow slowed to an unearthly rhythm. Most of the young people gathered on the village green every Friday night. Hundreds of candles lit the surrounding walkways, creating a festive vibe to the weekly affair. Gradually the areas fresh crisp evening air bit by bit changed to a dank mist ushered in by a ghostly vermilion wind. Winding its way down the country streets, forcing the young Rooks back to their homes, encased within a false security as they morphed into harbingers of tomorrow. Acting as if the coming dawn would be their savior, people finally came out of the homes to investigate the sudden perturbation. Simultaneously, a synchronous fear befell the entire crowd as, The Beautiful Stranger’s mysteriously haunting trance beguiled the village. The Witch, “with shaded eyes”, her infectious yet imperceptible hypnotizing glances, compelling anyone, everyone, to follow her spectral sway. Captive to the Vampire’s ministering Dominion hosting parties by day, slaves to her by night. “Sundown is her town, Everyone is going down” Such is the premise of Vampire.”
Of the B-side “Knockdown Day”, guitarist/vocalistAdam Sherman says, “Isolation and the feeling of being left out of the party are at the heart of “Knockdown Day”. Rest assured, a knockdown is temporary. We pick ourselves up and face tomorrow with humility and optimism.”
Do yourself a favor and check out “Vampire” from Nervous Eaters you won’t regret it.

Today, Thursday, January 18th – We are proud to present our second Artist Of The Day: Memphis based indie rock band -Lemon’s
We are not exactly sure how we stumbled upon Lemon’s ( probably one of our world famous late night music discoveries) , nevertheless we are so excited that we found them .
Lemon’s have a unique fresh sound that is certainly welcomed in today’s otherwise musical landscape.
The Whole Kameese : Thank you all for taking a moment to chat with us here at The Whole Kameese
The Whole Kameese: let’s get started, Could you introduce yourself and tell us your role in the band?
Ben Spiegelman:Hello, my name is Ben Spiegelman. My role for Lemon’s includes playing guitar, singing, and driving. I joined Lemon’s about 9 months ago, and am honored to be in this band.
Susie Hydrick:Helllo! My name is Susie Hydrick, I write, play guitar, and sing in Lemon’s. I also manage the band, run out social media channels, website, and handle booking (for now).
Jackson Williams :I’m Jackson Williams. I play drums in Lemon’s. My role also includes the occasional harmony. I’ve been with the band since 2020, though I feel that my involvement really grew in 2021. Susie and I have been playing together since high school so it feels a little bit like we’ve been in this band forever. Ben may joke about it, but I also passionately enjoy loading the trailer up. I love the trial and error of finding the best way to safely pack our gear and I think that also bleeds into my role in the writing process… there’s always another way.
The Whole Kameese:How did you become a band? What’s your origin story?
Susie: I have been writing songs since before I could even play guitar and went to high school with Jackson Williams and Luke Braswell, who is no longer in Lemon’s but does a lot of our visual work. In high school we were in a music class together where we became best friends and band mates in our school’s commercial music ensemble.
After high school, I left Memphis and went to Louisiana State University for one year, but while I was there, Luke, Jackson, and our old bass player, Aidan, who I met in high school through School of Rock, where we took guitar lessons, and Luke knew from Church, got a cover gig at a local venue.
Around the time I saw they got this cover gig I have been writing a lot and talking to Luke about how I wanted to do music for a living, so I came back to Memphis and booked another gig for the group Luke had put together and proposed the idea of making the group an actual band that writes and records originals. Two years after our formation, Ben officially joined the band, although he had been filling in for aidan on bass and luke on guitar at various gigs, and jackson and I had been performing with Ben for his solo music.
The Whole Kameese: How did you come up with the name Lemon’s for the band .
Jackson – Once upon a time, we were called Janice and the Lemons. Janice was our former guitar players Jeep Cherokee that had seen better days… a true lemon. She was precious to us for years and never let us down, though she threatened it daily. Down the line it became confusing; people thought Susie’s name was Janice and to be honest it was just too long of a name. We lopped off the front end and threw in an apostrophe for search-ability and a constant talking point… and thus, Lemon’s was born.
The Whole Kameese:If you had to describe your sound to someone who has never heard the band, how would you describe it ?
Jackson – We call ourselves indie rock, but I would say we walk the line between indie rock and alternative rock on a daily basis. Its music you’ll want to roll the windows down for. Bouncy driving bass lines and guitar parts with powerful drums reminiscent of the alternative rock we listened to as kids mixed with more modern melodies and vocal tones of the indie sound today. It’s like if Young the Giant and Cage the Elephant had a band baby; it’s well thought out where it needs to be yet rough around all the right edges.
The Whole Kameese: We, love your song “Don’t Leave” Can you tell us what it’s about and how it came to be ? Did the melody come first or did the lyrics come first .
Susie – Firstly, thank you! I’m glad you like it, I was very pleased with how it turned out. The melody for the song came together very quickly for me. I was messing around with ideas on my acoustic guitar as I do on a regular basis, and when I thought of that melody I really liked it so I recorded it immediately. The words for the first half of the chorus also just came to me as I was singing nonsense over the melody which gave me the idea for the song topic. It’s about falling in love and being able to see a future with someone, truly believing they are the one, but knowing that the future is out of your control, nothing is certain and they could leave you. Maybe from a breakup, life circumstances, things out of anyone’s control but Gods… these are all things I think about, as Ben and I have been dating for a couple of years. The last piece of the song was the bridge which I did not think of until the week we recorded it. I just knew I wanted it to be something repetitive that would build well with the instruments. Ben and Jackson’s parts really added the emotion to the song it needed and that all came together in the studio.
The Whole Kameese: What is your go to meal before a show?
Ben- A chipotle burrito bowl (white rice, pinto beans, chicken, veggies, corn, medium salsa, and light sour cream)
The Whole Kameese: If you could all choose one band to tour with , what band would that be ?
Susie – This one is a three way toss up for me between Nothing but Thieves (my favorite band) Young the Giant (another one of my favorite bands) and 5 Seconds of Summer (who are… who could’ve guessed, my other favorite band) I would have an out of body experience every-time I stepped on stage if we were to open for any of these three groups.
The Whole Kameese: If you could play anywhere, where would it be ? And why?
Jackson -The obvious answers are MSG, Red Rocks, and Wembley. Who wouldn’t want to play on the same stage as legends? And to see those venues packed to the brim full of like-minded music lovers would be so special… But to give a more personal answer, I want to perform everywhere more so than anywhere specific. I recently saw an article about how Jack White is one of the few artists to have played all 50 American states and all 13 Canadian provinces and territories. What a cool accomplishment. No stone left unturned and reaching everyone… even if it meant playing a show to 15,000 in Ontario back to back with a show to 600 in Nunavut. That’s what I want to do.
The Whole Kameese: What is your go to beverage?
Susie – A latte (more specifically, a dairy free Spanish latte with Oat Milk from The Hub in Memphis) and water
Jackson – Sweet tea never fails
Ben – I run off of water, coffee, and coors banquet
The Whole Kameese: What can we expect from Lemon’s in 2024?
Susie: More music! our main goal this year is to increase the output of music we record and release. we are always writing, so we have songs, recording is just an expensive process. More live shows in cities we have never played in before. We have a mini tour coming up. To start that off, we will be playing in New Orleans, Oxford, Birmingham, Chicago, Charolette, and Memphis! and finally selling online merch. but as far as things out of our control, go always hoping to end up on Spotify curated playlist and on tour with one of the bands we admire.
Thank You so much for chatting with us here at The Whole Kameese , We hope you have an amazing 2024

What seemingly sounds like a simple drum and bass track “SÉANCE” quickly becomes one of the most explosive tracks we have heard in quite some time .
Hammok presents “Seance”, the latest taste of their upcoming debut album “look how long lasting everything is moving for one”. The single is served up with an explosive one-take music video produced in the childhood home of vocalist Tobias Maxwell Osland.
“Seance” shows the band’s most direct side yet. The song barely rounds out two and a half minutes and at that time gives you a masterclass in hardcore chorus flair. The soundscape is controlled by a constantly forward-propelling drum machine and a metallic synth bass where vocalist Tobias Osland is given plenty of room to dominate the listener’s eardrum.shows the band’s most direct side yet. The soundscape is controlled by a constantly forward-propelling drum machine and a metallic synth bass where vocalist Tobias Osland is given plenty of room to dominate the listener’s eardrum.
With fragmented images inspired by horror films and occult traditions, “Seance” brings out a deeply dark and disturbing reality where the protagonist finds themselves in their worst nightmare. A feeling of being haunted or persecuted, a life where your reality is terrorized. Where it all began, in a SÉANCE
We are always asked “What’s New and Fresh In Music?…. Look no further than Hammok and “SEANCE”
We recently had the opportunity to check out the new single “Move On” from Barcelona punks Blowfuse. You can listen to “Move On” on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here
You can check out the video for “Move On” below.
Influenced by 80’s and 90’s punk rock waves and the skateboard lifestyle, Blowfuse crafts a style all its own, mixing the aggressiveness of hardcore punk, the catchy melodies of 90’s punk rock, the powerful classic rock riffs, with acidic and paranoid lyrics.
The new single “Move On” is the first of the new album which will be out in 2024! “Move On is a call to action and change. Its direct message conveys a sense of empowerment and the necessity of freeing oneself from the past to find a new direction in life.”, says singer Oscar Puig. The detrimental habit of complaining and self-pitying won’t do anything but increase frustration. Only by accepting reality and taking responsibility can you navigate towards a new direction.
Blowfuse are an amazing band with a brilliant sound. We hear shades of The Offspring on “Move On “ but Blowfuse has their own sound that we absolutely love
“Move On” will be out digitally today (December 15) , being presented by SBÄM, HFMN Crew, Epidemic Records and Infected Records.
We were absolutely beyond delighted to check out the new single “Breakup Songs” from Nashville based power pop band The Dreaded Laramie … But wait there’s more!!!
Today The Dreaded Laramie announce that they are joining the Smartpunk Records roster with the release of their latest single “Breakup Songs.” (Cue confetti here)
You can listen to “Breakup Songs” on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here
The track is a glittery showcase of the band’s femme power pop balanced with grittier rock nuances. VocalistMC Cunningham wears her heart on her sleeve with melodic moments and brutally honest lyrics about moving on from a bad breakup. This single marks the first release under Smartpunk Records with more gender-bending punk-tinged indie rock tunes en route in 2024.
Vocalist MC Cunningham explains “To try to capture where I was at moving forward from the breakup, I wanted to write a song that, stylistically, I would’ve been embarrassed to show my ex while we were together. I am super proud of the result, though. It is a song that feels and sounds like emotional liberation to me.”
The Dreaded Laramie has a sound and vibe that you simply cannot resist. We found ourselves blissfully singing along to “Breakup Songs” almost instantly.
They recorded their forthcoming debut LP with producer/mixer/engineer Dave Schiffman (PUP, Weezer, Vampire Weekend). The new record comes on the tail of their 2022 EP, “Everything A Girl Could Ask” (produced and co-written by Rozwell Kid’s Adam Meisterhans), which Punk News described as “gender-bending… marbled with sickly sweet, hyper-feminine vocals encapsulated by indie rock tinged boppy pogo punk and sprinkled with sudden moments of very macho displays of musicianship.” In 2023, The Dreaded Laramie conquered a 60-city tour across North America, joining festival lineups from Gainesville’s Fest to Montreal’s Pouzza Fest, and sharing stages with the likes of Soccer Mommy, Bad Moves, Rozwell Kid, and Tsunami Bomb.

We are absolutely loving the new video for “This # Is No longer In Service “ from Portland-based emo/punk rock group Swiss Army Wife. The song and video are from the band’s spectacular debut album “Medium Gnarly”.
Swiss Army Wife collaborated with long-time Touche Amore & Joyce Manor Producer Alex Estrada to deliver their sugar rush of a debut record, Medium Gnarly.
You can check out “MediumGnarly” Here and you can watch the video for “This # Is No Longer In Service “ below
In the new video directed by Anthony Lopez (@anthonylopets on IG), the band indulges in their fun and creative storytelling abilities when a persistent caller breaks up band practice. Who’s on the line? Pick it up and find out.
Vocalist, Kade Dale , had this to share about “This # Is No Longer In Service “: “’This #’ is about the toll that being constantly connected and on-call takes on your mental health. It can be hard to find space just to exist when anyone can hit you up at any time for any reason. At some point, even interacting with people you love starts feeling like a chore–which is terrifying. You start turning inward and shutting people out. Eventually, you’re stuck in your head, trapped in a slow panic, and the phone just keeps. fucking. ringing. I think that’s part of why this is the first track on the record–it’s an introduction to the sort of ‘I’m stuck here with my anxieties’ introspection that the rest of the album hovers around.”
Swiss Army Wife, without question , has given us one of our most favorite records of 2023 with “Medium Gnarly “ “This # Is No Longer In Service” is one track we definitely played a million times. We are so psyched to have an awesome visual that we will probably watch a million times.
We recently had the opportunity to check out the latest single “Nowhere” from from NY confessional gritty alt pop artist Middle Part.
You can listen to “Nowhere” on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here
“Nowhere” is “a refrain from all the anger that populates a lot of the record. It’s a confession of wanting to choose self-acceptance over continuously worrying about what others may think. Appreciating the present moment rather than placing oneself at the center of the universe is the key theme,” proclaims the artist.
There is real hypnotic vibe with “Nowhere” Middle Part offers up a haunting but memorable melody that stays with you .
Nowhere” is off of his highly anticipated debut album Disruptorwhich isset for release next year.
Middle Part – Andy Selkōw’s artist moniker – is hellbent on pouring his heart out and proving that earnest emotion and endless hooks can coexist within the distorted landscape of his nostalgic sound. Drawing inspiration from the late ’90s and early 2000s, Selkōw’s unique brand of unconventional pop music pays homage to the era, resonating with the confessional lyrical prowess of artists like Alanis Morisette, Third Eye Blind, and Michelle Branch. Selkōw, confides, “I’m so sensitive and hate to show it, but it just bleeds through all of my music.”
What really hooks you in with the music of Middle Part, is that you feel the familiarity in the music however, like in the case of “Nowhere” there is this fresh new approach that really gets your attention.

Not to sound like the old guy who reads the newspaper on his front porch but, back in our day there was nothing better than a label sampler/ compilation . Boston Indie record label has pulled out all the stops and given us an epic free 31 track compilation available on Bandcamp today (December 1st)
But wait….. there’s more! Rum Bar Records is offering a label wide 20% off discount through the end of the month on Bandcamp, using the code holiday20
The compilation and the Bandcamp sale is part of Rum Bar capping off 10 years of music from Boston and beyond, specializing in the kind of garage-pop and rebel-rousing, swaggering that had made the label a fixture in the global music scene. The Nice Pricepulls together more than 30 selections from Rum Bar’s 2023 release slate, including music from The Lemon Drop Gang, Kevin Stevenson, Danny The K, The Gypsy Moths, The Amplifier Heads, Cindy Lawson, Eddie Japan, Leather Catsuit, The Shang Hi Los, Stars Like Ours, Stop Calling Me Frank, Girl with a Hawk, Jay Allen and the Archcriminals, and plenty more. It follows the summer’s Swagger compilation, and October’s After School Special: Second Semester.
“I love doing these label sampler and Bandcamp compilations,” says Rum Bar Records honcho Lou Mansdorf. “Over the years I have done various ones some sequels, some with altering music themes related to the Rum Bar Records roster of genres and artists falling under our gonzo hybrid garage rock, power pop, glam, girl group sounds, swaggering rock n roll, rebel rousing alt country rock, and heartland punk.”
While past compilations often span bonus artists across the Rum Bar family tree, The Nice Pricelocks in on the year that was, which saw a tireless Rum Bar unveil more than 30 releases – singles, EPs, albums, re-releases, comps, and whatever else – since January.
“After compiling and sequencing I just got extremely excited – like a kid who ate too much candy,” laughs Mansdorf. “Just one song after the next, I am like ‘Damn I love this song… man, I love this band.’ I just am so thankful and grateful to still, after 35 years, be involved with artists, musicians and bands making music that I love to listen to. It’s been a long and stressful year and we had all of this unbelievable music created by incredible people to keep us going. I can listen to this all day long and would love anyone giving us a listen to play this start to finish making it the soundtrack to your playlist, day and week.”
We are absolutely over the moon about “The Nice Price” from Rum Bar Records it is a can’t miss of some of the bands and artists in Boston and beyond.
Cheers to Lou Mansdorf and the whole Rum Bar records family for giving us music lovers an incredible 2023…. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2024

Her latest single “One For Me” is about an unexpected love. Dea sings about the type of relationship that comes out of nowhere and ends up being the best thing that ever happened to you. ‘An Evening With Lovina Falls’ delivers Valerie Forgione’s art-pop project to the stage December 2 at The Rockwell Theatre in Somerville
We are so excited for Lovina Falls’ upcoming debut live performance at The Rockwell in Somerville on Saturday, December 2. The night features Valerie Forgione’s art-pop project performing debut album Calculating the Angle of Our Descent with an eight-piece band, as well as performances by two notable circus artists in Chels Errante and contortionist Judith as Twisted Elegance. It all helps shape a certain type of mood that is reflected within Forgione’s theatrical and cinematic sound.
Billed as an event to celebrate music and movement, “An Evening with Lovina Falls” marks Forgione’s first appearance on stage with a live band since her former project, ‘90s-era alt-rock luminaries Mistle Thrush, last reunited nearly a decade ago, back in 2014
The show caps off an exciting inaugural year for Lovina Falls, which after releasing Calculating the Angle of Our Descent in the spring, both digitally and on limited-edition vinyl, has released a pair of Joan Hathaway music videos (for July’s “On Your Side” and September’s “Vaulted”). They are followed by a pair of Forgione-created visualizers in November – first for the swirling, piano-led escapade “Today” on November 22, which echoes the slinky song’s exploration of the human psyche; and a vibrant Peter Max-inspired visual for the electronica-driven “Too Bright To Burn,” featuring more than 1,000 hand-drawn illustrated frames set to music, on November 29 – to further highlight deeper cuts on the 10-track record.
You can check out Lovina Falls on Spotify and the other worldly album “Calculating the Angle of Our Descent” Here. As well as on Bandcamp Here and you can check some stunning visuals for “Vaulted” Here and for “On Your Side “ Here

Lovina Falls has so far presented these works in recorded versions, but is now excited to allow them to breathe and evolve in a live setting, where her panoramic origins of the songs give way to the feelings of those hearing them. It’s fitting Forgeione has chosen an intimate theater setting for this debut show, which draws on various layers of artistic performance and fosters community between performer and attendees. But with that comes a bit of risk, especially for a project conceived as a solo endeavor.
“I am very excited… and I suppose a little nervous, too,”Forgione says of The Rockwell show. “Writing and recording the album was a kind of solitary experience; I’m really looking forward to sharing the music with both the folks on stage and those in the audience.”
The artist energy that surrounds Lovina Falls and Valerie Forgione has the vibe and feel of a priceless work of art . We were enthralled by the audio wonderment in “Calculating the Angle of Our Descent” we can only imagine how special and magical the live presentation will be.
Joining Lovina Falls to bring the recorded album to performative life are Forgione’sMistle Thrush bandmates Scott Patalano on guitar and Matt Klain on bass, as well as Chuck Ferreira on drums (Eddie Japan, The Shang Hi-Los), Laura Klain on backing vocals (The Daylilies), Marnie Hall on violin (Boston Music Award nominee), and Boston music veterans Brenden Cobb on guitar and Carrie Ingber on keys.
December 2nd at the Rockwell with Lovina Falls promises to be a magical musical experience. Be sure to get your tickets Here

“Waiting OnThe Radio” is a extraordinary track and an absolute must listen.
Morgenmusik / Nachtschlager is a well crafted and well written record, showing just how talented and musically gifted Anton Barbeau is . Some standouts from Morgenmusik / Nachtschlager include “Milksnake, “Mothership Projection “ Our favorite track is “Greasy” it sounds like it should be part of a broadway show .

We have had this day circled on our calendar for quite some time. Today (November 3rd ) We finally get to listen to the new EP “Just Look At The Moon “ from New York based Indie-pop artist Cade Hoppe
We were absolutely mesmerized by “Just LookAt The Moon “ from Cade Hoppe. Right out of the gate with “Fresh Start” Cade Hoppe is transforming himself into a indie-pop tour de force, right before our very ears and we are loving every moment.
From heartfelt love songs (“Labels,” “Only Human”) to existential reflections (“Moon,” “Fresh Start”), the 7-track EP demonstrates his remarkable range — vocally, sonically, and lyrically. “I managed to get much more existential with this project, for better or worse,” he says. “The more I give to music and the pursuit of it, the more detached from reality I become, and there’s a lot of that in here.”
The EP features a range of musical guests and collaborators, like Rob Moose (Sufjan Stevens, Phoebe Bridges, Taylor Swift), Harper James (Eighty Ninety, James Bay, Aaron Taos), Bobby Hawk (Taylor Swift, The 1975, Florence and the Machine), and Jesse Blum (Twenty One Pilots, MisterWives, Nas) that amplify the record’s richly textured sound.

There is this really cool almost David Bowie feel on “Just Look At The Moon” We are not sure if it is intentional or just a happy coincidence, either way it’s another example of the ultra cool vibe that surrounds Cade Hoppe.
So go ahead and find your favorite listening spot and get lost in the otherworldly experience that is “Just Look At The Moon from Cade Hoppe
We recently got the fantastic opportunity to check out Los Angeles based bedroom synth pop duo Fake Dad (Andrea de Varona (she/her) and Josh Ford (he/him) The duo formed in 2020, the two met at a college party in the East Village and have been inseparable ever since. Melting their own unique artistic visions to build a shared sonic shorthand, Fake Dad create an intoxicating and colorful musical fusion complete with quirky synths, catchy pop-laden hooks and sun-soaked layered guitars. With a signature production sound and distinct vocal warmth, the two write and record expansive musical moments from their apartment.
You can listen to “Yerba Mala” on SpotifyHere and on Apple Music Here .
What quickly grabs your attention about Fake Dad is that, although Andrea and Josh come from different musical backgrounds, they share a common goal: to create music that understands you.
“Yerba Mala from Fake Dad is a complete musical experience that makes you think and want to dance all at the same time
Yerba Mala, takes a deep dive into interpersonal relationship dynamics in an ever-changing world. In particular, the project explores frontperson Andrea de Varona’s nuanced relationship with a first-gen Latinx identity. Yerba Mala is a Spanish phrase that Andrea’s mother would use in gardening to describe the weeds and vines that needed to be removed so that new flowers could grow every season. “From friends to family to hometowns, these songs explore what it’s like to grow with (or apart from) other people in search of self-betterment. Sometimes relationships change. Sometimes they get stronger, and sometimes they have to be left behind in order for you to heal and grow into the version of you that was always there, waiting to bloom,” confides Andrea. The five-track EP is a genre-bending adventure of sound with elements of rock, pop, synth and electronic all colliding for an unforgettable listen.
We fell instantly for leading eading track “So Dramatic!”, is a bilingual English / Spanish song that lightheartedly teases melodrama and over-the-top theatrics. Brimming with an energetic, vibrant melody and playful multi-layered vocals, Andrea sings, “I’m so dramatic, actin’ like I’m drowning on the Titanic.” She further adds, “Having bilingual lyrics that are never fully in Spanish was very intentional because we’re trying to capture the identity and existing duality of being a Hispanic person in America who may have grown up speaking primarily one language at home but largely another in the outside world.”
We can neither confirm or deny if we sing “So Dramatic “ at the top of our lungs after we drop kids off to school in the morning.
We loved the pop vibe in Souvenir Store”, which demonstrates the band’s ability to create lush and sweeping avant garde pop filled with fresh harmonies. Chronicling inner struggles of fear and anxiety and the effort of always trying to cope, the single is a relatable narrative. With “FASHION GIRL”, Fake Dad crafts a hyper pop meets electronic rock track filled with a bass heavy driving beat and danceable rhythms. The song chronicles issues with body dysmorphia and the dark side of the fashion and entertainment industry, for an important narrative and contemplative listen.
“I Like the Beach” is a slow burning moody left-of-center pop track filled with soul-baring vocals, (seriously the vocals on this track are straight up phenomenal) intense crescendos of percussion, and haunting harmonics. Andrea sings all about desire and connection with an intense and emotional delivery, creating a web of tension that is as cathartic as it is intriguing. Finally, “Momento” draws the listener in with a washed-out riff, siren-like backup vocals, and shimmering iridescent sonics that feel warm and inviting. Sharing an experience of being fully immersed in a precious moment, the lyrics paint a vivid portrait of an intimate time and place.
We double dare you not to sing along with “Momento “ before it ends, it’s virtually impossible.

Recently we got the chance to listen to the absolutely stunning debut album “Nonfiction” via H1 Massive from , New Jersey indie-pop project Teen Idle . Teen Idle is the project of multi-instrumentalist,songwriter, and producer Sara Abdelbarry. You can listen to “Nonfiction” on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here

We were moved beyond words by the stunning debut album “Nonfiction “ Sara Abdelbarry brilliantly and artfully weaves together 11 emotional and melodically and sonically tracks that literally has us hanging on every word .
We loved the singles that preceded “Nonfiction “ “Birthday Cake,”Norway” and “Saccharine” are beautifully crafted songs that showcase the extraordinary musical talents of Sara Abdelbarry.
“I named the record Nonfiction because it’s literally what it would be like to open up my journal and read my thoughts over these specific few years in my life,” says Abdelbarry. “That being said, I hope whoever listens to this album can appreciate the varied experiences that come with growing up and see my own version of the moments of heartbreak, joy, and anger that come with that. The album is brutally honest and lays it all out on the table without any sugar coating – besides a song literally titled ‘Saccharine’ [laughs]. So, anyone in search of honesty will find a nice companion in these songs.”
We think the honesty that Sara , speaks of is why these songs are so power .
“I think each single sounds more different than the one that came before it. They all progressively build up to an idea that’s prevalent on the record, which is that our experiences can be made up of multiple textures that are seemingly different from one another but are really just parts to a whole. As multi-faceted human beings, we have all these different parts to us, identities that might seem to be at odds with each other but ultimately just make us the unique people we are. I’ve never phrased it that way before, but I guess I just realized what I’m actually trying to accomplish by making albums.”
We could help but draw the comparison of the late great Elliot Smith, while listening to “Nonfiction. The songs “Things You Say “ and “Every Night “ were two songs that we had constant repeat , the melodies and imagery in those songs are simply otherworldly.
Do yourself a favor and let yourself fall head over heels in love with “Nonfiction” from Teen Idle.
There is something truly special about listening to a really really good record…. It is like time is paused , and all you can feel and hear is the music. Boston based Paper Tigers have offered up their extraordinary debut record “Charmer” to the universe and it’s phenomenal.
You can listen to “Charmer” on Spotify Here and on Apple Music Here

It is highly appropriate that the treasure trove of wondrous rock music on “Charmer” is being released on a Tuesday. There was a time when all the great and important music was released on a Tuesday. Paper Tigers are a throwbackand their debut is both great and important.
Paper Tigers formed in Allston in 2019 and quickly weathered a global pandemic, a venue crisis in their home city, a growing national hostility to the arts and those who create it, and collective whirlwind of insanity that seems to mark each day. Charmer, and all its furious ambition, is the ultimate release for Paper Tigers, a burning exhale that follows a string of four EPs and several singles, including last year’s breakout “I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me This Sooner” (which secretly contained a snippet of the new album’s title track). -( If you are scoring at home we think containing a snippet of the new album’s title track is absolutely brilliant)
Charmer is a rock record with a pop polish, and a pop record with rock edge; the more the listener peels back each lyrical and sonic layer, tying together the band’s disparate sound that incorporate post-punk, grunge, Britpop, and American indie, the more reality’s grim nature starts to come into view.
If we’re being honest ( and trust we always are ) We are absolutely enthralled with Paper Tigers and their debut album “Charmer “ We haven’t felt this way since we first heard a certain band from Seattle in the 90’s
“We’re proud of this album,” declares PaperTigers. “With each release, we pushed ourselves both in terms of songwriting and production and this was the culmination of everything we learned about both. It represents the very best we’re capable of and we wouldn’t change a thing about it. With every song we write or piece of art we create, we just hope it connects with our audience in some special way. This LP represents our most thought-out and effortful body of work to-date. We’re hoping it elevates our fan’s perspective of the band and that they’re drawn back to it, many times.”
Repeated listens is where the elements begin to shine: The razor-sharp guitarwork and production of Bjarki Guðmundsson; the heavy, absorbing basslines of MatthewHughes; the thunderous drums and atmospheric percussion of Ben “Cutty” Cuthbert; and the sardonic vocals of Michael Medlock, a man with a street preacher urgency hellbent on warning the world both of the dangers within and an optimistic way out.
Paper Tigers are a band that is musically on a different level. Like highly skilled precision craftsmen , Paper Tigers have created an absolute masterpiece with their amazing debut album “Charmer”
From heralding the age of revolution and its dissemination through media (“Pariah”) to ‘90s grunge-era conspiracy theories (“Soft Focus”), Charmer is a lyrically confrontational album as Medlock registers and relays the world around him. As he sings in the swirling, paranoid album track “The Drugs Are Kicking In”: “Modern living made life easy / But it also made us angrier.”
“The lyrics on Charmer are both anecdotal and narrative,” the band admits. “Sometimes Michael is singing from his own perspective and other times he’s writing fiction. His lyrics orbit around love, loss, personal life experiences and his hopes for the future.”
We honestly were consumed almost immediately with this record. Intoxicating melodies mix with flawless vocals , there isn’t a bad track on “Charmer” . We found ourselves singing along almost instantly. Standouts on “Charmer” include “Sandcastle”, “Animals” and the two scorching summer singles “Wedding Cake” and “Into That Good Night”
The storylines that emerge through the calculated noise are plentiful, and remain open to listener interpretation. But one aspect of “Charmer” that was made clear from the start was the ability to convey these songs in a precise and crystalline manner, made possible in part by work done at both Paper Tigers’ home studio at Cataclysmic Records in Brighton, and with recording engineer Alex Allinson at The Bridge Sound and Stage just across the Charles River in Cambridge.
“In the past, we’ve tried to do as much as we can by ourselves,” saysPaper Tigers. “There was a time when we saw it as a way to speed up the learning curve of being a band. It would have been fun to go into a proper recording studio for the first EPs, but we needed to do all that homework and run into all the obstacles to progress as a band and songwriters. We met up with Alex Allinson at The Bridge and pitched the idea of tracking live versions of the songs in the studio, to capture drums. We ended up getting so much more than drums during that one-day session, thanks to Alex. He went above and beyond, made us feel comfortable, and was able to dial in the perfect sound in a matter of seconds. Having those great-sounding tracks from Alex made the process so much easier, and because of that, we could allocate more of our time to the creative side of production than before.”
We strongly feel that listening to music should be a memorable experience. Paper Tigers deliver a memorable musical experience with their impressive debut album “Charmer” that you won’t soon forget.
