Jonathan Richman Shines With New Album, “Only Frozen Sky Anyway”

We recently had the opportunity to check out the new album, “Only Frozen Sky Anyway”,the 18th album, via Blue Arrow Records (vinyl and CD will be released at a later date TBA), from legendary singer-songwriter, Jonathan Richman, and spoiler alert: it is stunning.

You can listen to “Only Frozen Sky Anyway” on Spotify Here, Apple Music Here

With his longtime drummer and percussionist Tommy Larkins and former Modern Lovers bandmate the inimitable Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) on keyboards, Richman follows in his longtime tradition of injecting his lyrical wit into indie rock in a fashion that he perfected over the decades.

Kicking off with the rhythmic “I Was Just A Piece of Frozen Sky Anyway,” the album finds Richman better than ever traipsing through acoustic styles effortlessly from track to track. Lifting the melody and chorus from Bee Gee’s eponymous hit single, Richman creates a nostalgic narrative in “Night Fever,” where he takes on a voyeuristic look on typical a Saturday night in Europe. The infectiously propulsive “The Older Girl” sees Richman warning a younger fellow to avoid dating up (“She was a whole year older / And I looked a lot younger / I was too young to know how important those two things were”). The Spanish-inflected “Se Va Pa’volver” captures the thematic thread of departures and returns that permeates the album. Richman explains, “Like many of the songs on this new record, which either existed in a vague, skeletal form or did not at all before we started recording on January 5th of ’25 (and finished by January 10th), this song fits in with the theme that seems to have taken shape during that recording session. The song is about how our friends are leaving, in their dying, on an errand, only to return in another role… with another mission. How do I dare say such a thing? Oh…I don’t know.”

In addition to this album of all new material, Blue Arrow will be releasing his last three albums Ishkode! Ishkode! (2016), SA! (2018) and Want To Visit My Inner House? (2021) as well as the EPs Cold Pizza & Other Hot Stuff(2022) and Yatasamaroun (2023) to streaming services for the first time ever. Previously only available via Bandcamp or for purchase at shows, the rollout of these releases finally makes them accessible to a much larger audience. Of these albums, Richman says, “Jerry Harrison, Nicole Montalbano and I produced [Want To Visit My Inner House?] as well as SA! (2018). To us, the two albums are related in the sense that Want to Visit My Inner House?suggests where SA was starting to head.”

In support of Only Frozen Sky Anyway, Richman has announced a Fall tour that kicks off October 3rd in Boise, ID and circles the continent, hitting Calgary, Winnipeg, Minneapolis, Albany, before wrapping up at Portland, ME’s SPACE Gallery.  Dates and info

Hinder Releases An Electrifying New Album, “Back To Life”

We recently had the awesome opportunity to check out the new album, “Back To Life”, from Multi-platinum rock icons Hinder. You can listen to “Back To Life “, Here

Back to Life, is the bands 7th Studio album and available on all DSPs worldwide today. The release comes just ahead of a packed summer that will see the band’s 2nd headline tour of the year and a number of festival appearances including Louder Than Life, Aftershock, and Summer of ‘99 & Beyond. After shelving a full album in 2020, Hinder nearly swore off the idea of ever writing new music again. But when the album’s lead single “Bring Me Back to Life” unexpectedly came to fruition, everything changed.

When you’ve been writing songs for over 20 years, sometimes you run out of things to say,” confesses drummer + founding member Cody Hanson. “In life in general, it’s easy to become complacent and uninspired. That’s why ‘Bring Me Back to Life’ is such an important track, not only for the album, but for our band as a whole. After writing an entire album and then throwing it away in 2020, we had become discouraged and decided that we weren’t going to release any new music, much less an entire album. However, as soon as we wrote ‘Bring Me Back to Life,’ everything changed. Sometimes, it just takes one special song to breathe life back into a band, and this song became the catalyst for the entire album.”

Hinder’s story begins in 2001, when Cody Hanson (drums), Joe “Blower” Garvey (lead guitar), and Mike Rodden (bass) met and activated their musical chemistry. The 2005 hit “Lips of an Angel” from the band’s debut album Extreme Behavior, since certified 3x Platinum, topped the charts and remains a radio mainstay. Powerful lead vocalist Marshal Dutton joined them in 2015. Throughout their discography, Hinder has embodied an ethos of defiance and tenacity through gutsy lyrics, rousing melodies, and soaring choruses. Each album in their musical journey has reflected a progression, from the grittier early days of Take It to the Limit to the more introspective and exploratory energy of their most recent album, 2017’s The Reign.

“Back To Life”, from Hinder, is the band firing on all cylinders, delivering a high octane rock record that will put a smile on any rock fan’s face.

Album opener, “Live Without It” , is a brilliantly crafted song with a memorable melody and flawless vocals , we found ourselves hitting repeat on this track several times.

“Everything Is A Cult” , “Break The Cycle “ and Vultures are some of the solid tracks that really stood out to us . As a whole, “Back To Life” is a phenomenal collection of songs

If we had to pick one song that really resonated with us , it would be without out a doubt, be “Time To Breath “ We were literally hanging on every word and chord on this stunning song . – Bravo

Back To Life” from Hinder, is an absolute “Must Listen “

Honer had a breakout year in 2024, starting strong with his single “Nowhere Fast” and a powerful duet, “Take Me As I Am,” with Wyatt Flores. He continued to impress with the release of his sophomore album, Fighting For, in June, which showcased his vulnerable songwriting and soothing vocals. The album was so well-received that he later collaborated with Charles Wesley Godwin to reimagine “Mr. Meyers,” a standout track from the album.

As 2024 drew to a close, Honer released his latest EP, Annabelle, which features a mix of new songs and previously released singles such as “Me, Without You,” Lead Role,” and “High School Reunion.” The EP’s narrative, centered around the titular character Annabelle, culminates with “Happy In The End,” a song that encapsulates a whirlwind of emotions about past relationships.

We can’t wait for the spring tour from Evan Honer as well as more amazing music, including the new single “Waiting For It” featuring Michal Leah on Friday, January 10th
