As soon as we heard the first note of the new single, “American Farts”, from The Boy Detective, we were immediately captivated. The vibe and electrifying sound of “American Farts “ is enough to stop Rush Hour traffic.

Produced by Roger Lima (Less Than Jake) and mixed/mastered by Eric Taft (The Dangerous Summer, Cliffdiver, We Are The Union), “American Farts” is a blast of melody, humor, and heart — a classic ska-punk singalong tailor-made for road trips, basement shows, and bad days turned good. The song’s high-octane horns, shout-along chorus, and warm sense of humor make it an instant anthem for anyone who’s ever needed a musical pick-me-up.

Hailing from Southern California, Save Ferris burst onto the scene in the mid-’90s with their infectious blend of ska, punk, and pop. Led by powerhouse frontwoman Monique Powell, they quickly gained a devoted following with their dynamic live shows and bold reimagining of “Come On Eileen,” which helped catapult their debut album It Means Everything (1996) into the spotlight.

Known for their explosive horn sections, driving guitar riffs, and Powell’s unmistakable vocals, Save Ferris became a defining voice of the third-wave ska movement. Despite lineup changes and shifting musical landscapes, their vibrant sound and deep connection with fans have endured.

We are absolutely beyond thrilled to finally check out in it’s entirety, the phenomenal debut solo album, “Benergy”, from Big D and the Kids Table Bassist Ben Basile, via , Sleepwalk Sounds. You can listen to “Benergy” Here

Ben Basile, (pronounced  “ba-sill-ee”)has crafted a vibrant, melodic work of art with “Benergy” , that is a must listen for anyone who calls themselves music lovers.

We were absolutely captivated by the three singles that were released before the album, ( “Mountain Road,”74 Leonard Street” and “Cacao Knibb”)

Benergy’, the album’s title, originated from a lighthearted moment with one of Basile’s bass students. “When I play ska punk, like with Big D and The Kids Table, it’s all about playing on top, playing with momentum and energy. Pushing the music the entire time,” Basile explains. His student’s response? “Benergy?”—a phrase that stuck and ultimately became the album’s name.

Ben Basile is a Hudson Valley-born musician who grew up in Wappingers Falls and now lives in Rosendale, NY.

His passion for music ignited in his youth, sparked by a stack of ska and punk rock CDs from his sister.

A graduate of Dutchess Community College and SUNY New Paltz, Basile studied jazz and business before launching a career that’s taken him across six continents with legendary acts like Pilfers, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, and Big D and the Kids Table — all while staying deeply rooted in the Hudson Valley music scene.

The new album, ‘Benergy’, is a culmination of Basile’s years of musical exploration and passion, featuring a stellar lineup of musicians from the ska and jazz worlds. Recorded at multiple studios across the East Coast and mastered by Tom Rosato of Zena Mastering,

Some of our favorite tracks on “Benergy” are “Dub 215”, “87 to 90” and “Hot Drop” However, our favorite track on the album, is “Whataboutism” We are completely smitten with track . Ben Basile , has created a brilliant and memorable groove that is absolutely top notch. ( We freaking love it )

The vibrant and electrifying sounds of “CACO KNIBB” , from Ben Basile, are like nothing we have ever heard before …. Such sweet , sweet sounds .

Ben says, “”Cacao Knibb” has been in development for a long time and took years to find its final form which appears on the album. The title is a play on words with two of my favorite things: Ska music and Dark Chocolate. Cacao Nib being a piece of a dried cacao bean and Lloyd Knibb was the original drummer with The Skatalites who pretty much created the whole style! I always love when ska is blended with latin rhythms, so that was also a part of the inspiration for this piece. “Cacao Knibb” feature’s the album’s co-producer Jon Degen on saxophone, as well as a piano solo by my longtime friend Sean Morrison.”

“74 Leonard Street” from Ben Basile, is one of those magical melodic melodies that you can’t help but fall completely in love with the minute you hear it

A heartfelt tribute to the legendary Knitting Factory venue in Manhattan, “74 Leonard Street” reflects on the golden era of ska shows that shaped Basile’s musical journey. “I wrote this as a tribute to the old Knitting Factory when it was still in Manhattan in the early 2000s,”says Basile. “It was at this venue that my love and appreciation for the genre grew even deeper. This was where I first saw many artists who would influence my career: The Skatalites, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, Pilfers, Westbound Train, and Victor Rice. Fast forward ten years, and I would later have the chance to perform with both New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble and the Pilfers!”

The single features standout performances from longtime musical collaborators Matt Garrison (Saxophone) and Vince Tampio (Trumpet), delivering a vibrant sound that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the genre.

First Single Is Mountain Road

Independent Record Label, Wiretap Records, has announced the launch an offshoot imprint label, Sleep Walk Sounds. The newly formed imprint, will specialize in releasing music in various genres from soul, roots reggae/rocksteady, jazz funk, americana, indie and more.

“For the past 10 years of running Wiretap Records, I’d constantly receive submissions from bands/artists of all types of genres. From soul, country, R&B, roots reggae and more. I love all sorts of music as we all do. While a lot of times, the music and artists were not the ideal for a Wiretap release, I still found it appealing to possibly create an imprint that was able to cater to those sounds that weren’t punk/hardcore, alternative/rock leaning.”–Rob Castellon, Owner Wiretap Records, Sleep Walk Sounds

The newly formed Sleep Walk Sounds,has announced it’s debut release due this spring, a solo record Benergy from Big D and The Kids Table bassist Ben Basile.

While Ben has performed and recorded with dozens of artists throughout his career, this is his first album consisting of his original compositions. In February of 2023, Ben enlisted the help of his best friend and bandmate Jon Degen to produce the new album. Recording took place in the spring and fall of 2023 and was completed just before the year’s end.

The pun “Benergy” was coined by one of Ben’s students during a bass lesson. From its initial inception, Benergy was simply a collection of compositions; now it is an album that encapsulates the joy, rhythm, and spirit of the music that has helped shape Ben Basile as an artist.

Benergy” is a pun that one of my bass students came up with. I was explaining to my student what it means to play “on top of the beat” which means playing just slightly early to push the feel of the bassline. “When I play ska punk, like with Big D and The Kids Table, it’s all about playing on top, playing with momentum and energy. Pushing the music the entire time.” Her response was: “Benergy?” with a smile. We shared a laugh and I wrote it down for later.

The debut single, “Mountain Road” from Ben Basile is an absolute musical treat that simply can’t be ignored. It is a burst of traditional ska/rocksteady goodness that’ll have you tapping your foot in no time.  You can listen to “Mountain Road “ Here

Ben says, “”Mountain Road” was written to represent where I am now in life… It’s literally the road I live on currently.” The track is now streaming everywhere via Sleep Walk Sounds.

Personally speaking, Save Ferris was a big part of our musical upbringing. “Lights Out In The Reptile House “ is vintage Save Ferris and we freaking love it.

With its irresistible blend of upbeat rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics, the song is sure to resonate with both longtime fans and new listeners alike.

Listening to the new single “See All Color” from The Goodwin Club, is a bright beautiful blast from the past and we are absolutely loving it .

The Goodwin Club became staples in the early-mid 90’s OC ska scene, playing early packed shows with the likes of Reel Big Fish, No Doubt, Sublime,The Aquabatsand more before dissolving in 1995. The lively local act featured members that went on to be in such bands as The Aquabats, The Hippos, The Scholars, Teen Heroes and Reel Big Fish.

The early.mid 90’s OC ska scene was such a vibrant scene , we are thrilled to know that The Goodwin Club has delivered a kick ass new tune with “See All Color” and… we are also thrilled to know that The Goodwin Club is announcing today that they are signing with SoCal label Wiretap Records as they prep their new album “Join the Club” almost 30 years after their first album.

Vocalist Tami Demaree says, “I think we were so young we were kinda set apart from other bands. We had both a male and female singer which was different from other bands back then as well. Other than surf all we had to do back then in Orange County was have a band. We practiced a lot and we immediately recorded a four song demo. Doing that, we got on lots of shows quickly. John Pantle from the Knuckle brothers took us under his wing and had us opening for lots of shows. He was probably the only ska promoter back then and the reason the ska scene was so big in OC.”

The band says, “30 years between album releases might sound impossible to some, but we in The Goodwin Club stare impossibility square in the eyes and say NAY, It shall be done!

We’ve loved creating the best high energy live show possible together these past few years but now we’ve bottled up that energy, churned it like crazy, and channeled it into our new album, “Join The Club” coming out on Wiretap Records, this summer! We can’t wait for you to listen, come to the shows again, and . . . JOIN. THE. CLUB!!!”

The Goodwin Club started in 1993. Members were all from the Huntington Beach area and mostly went to Edison High School. The original line up was Tami Demaree (vocals), Charles Grey (guitar) , Erick Hauser (bass), Marc Bosman (keys) , Andy Goodman (drums), Patrick McDonald (trombone), Jesse Wilder (sax), Adam Diebert (trumpet), Christ Scott (vocals). Later members included Aaron Barrett (trombone), Scott Klopfenstein (trumpet), Grant Barry (trombone), Dean Medford (sax) , Corey Pollack (guitar) and Rich Zahniser (trombone). The band dissolved in 1995 due to half the band going on to college. Most remaining members joined The Aquabats while other members were in The Hippos, The Scholars, Teen Heroes and Reel Big Fish.

Massachusetts punk band Already Dead are one of those bands we just can’t get enough of. Already Dead comes at you full force armed with an explosive sound and message to match . This is on full display on “Something Like A War”

We loved the ska feel on “Something Like A War” It is one of those songs that stays with you and before you know it you are singing along . “Something Like A War,” the single, is a missile of a song that clocks in at under two minutes. And might just create a new wave of ska-punk on its own. 

“It’s about our personal battles – we all know ‘em, we all have ‘em,” Cummings says of the Something Like A War title track. “The struggle we go through to make the right decisions, day in and day out. Accepting we will make mistakes along the way. But still fighting every day, sometimes to amend the sins of yesterday. This and ‘Spirit’ represent the vibe I think the album encapsulates. Lyrically they have themes of social commentary and self-reflection, and musically both are on the harder side.”

We are all in on “Something Like A War” and we are counting the days until the album release.

Central California Latin ska reggae band MENTO BURU releasing new EP “East Bakersfield Christmas II”

We recently checked out Mento Buru, a 7 piece band from Bakersfield, CA that combines an energetic blend of Latin alternative, Jamaican SKA and reggae sounds.

Veterans of ska music’s hyperactive nineties third wave, the group has released music on the Moon Ska and Steady Beat record labels establishing their reputation as a genre-defying musical act around the globe.

Now, the band is excited to announce the release of, “East Bakersfield Christmas II,” a six-song follow up to their hugely popular 2020 holiday ep. Titled in honor of the historic and culturally diverse neighborhood where the group formed and still resides, the ep is a sonic reflection of the culturally rich area that also boasts its own colorful musical history.

“We had such an overwhelming response to our last holiday release,” said lead vocalist Matt Munoz. “There was no doubt in our minds that we had to keep this project going. We are so Thankful to KCSOS and our generous community sponsors for this collaboration and look forward to sharing this new collection of songs with our fans who’ve given us so much support all these years. Merry Christmas and Feliz Navidad!”

Recorded at Summit Studios in Bakersfield, the project was mixed by acclaimed studio engineer Reade Wolcott (We Are The Union, Fat Mike’s Fat Mic Podcast) and mastered by Dave Fore (Collie Buddz, The Lacs, N2Deep.)

Third Wave Ska Heroes Save Ferris Release Holiday Single ‘Xmas Blue’ In Anticipation of New Original Music Coming in 2024…. We Are Very Very Happy About This.

We might be showing our age here but, we are absolutely over the moon excited that Southern California ska heroes Save Ferris have dropped their first new original song since 2017, the holiday single “Xmas Blue”, a lonely Christmas tale of a heart longing for a loved one who is not there.

Save Ferris leader Monique Powell said, “I wrote the song about someone I knew that went through a hard divorce, and even two years later was still so obsessed with his ex-wife that it was borderline stalking.”

Powell added, “I’m excited to give this present to fans as a warmup for what is to come in 2024 with all new music that I’ve been working on and is ready for release!”

Save Ferris teamed with the newly-launched music community platform We Are Giant to give fans a preview of the release.

“Social media is littered with so much other content that by partnering with We Are Giant, it allows me to directly connect with Save Ferris fans in a much more intimate way,” said Powell.

The Abruptors Gives Us Total Ska Goodness With New Album “Noticeably Cheerless”

We promised ourselves we would be nice and calm with our review for Buffalo based The Abruptors and their new record “Noticeably Cheerless. But…. We pushed play and as soon as we heard the first track “Best Wishes And Warmest Regards “ we couldn’t contain our excitement. Truth be told we have been super psyched about this record for a while.

Even though “Best Wishes And Warmest Regards “ is a song about someone you are happy to see leave , it has a melody that is upbeat and fun . We love the Chris Graue directed video it’s wacky and extremely entertaining. You can watch below

If we had to pick a favorite track off of the new record ( Which is so hard !!!) It would have to be “ Waiting Forever “ We really felt a connection with this track . “Noticeably Cheerless” is an absolutely spectacular collections of songs .We may have to replace a few floors in the office because, we would put on the record and it was an instant dance party.
