Band Shares Story of Near-Disaster on the Road; Announces Tour Dates with Calling All Captains, Violet Night, and Gutter King

The excitement and energy generated by Chief State on their new single, “No Breaks “ is literally off the charts .

No Brakes”, a high-octane anthem born from one of the band’s scariest road experiences.

Frontman Fraser Simpson recalls the real-life inspiration:

“Summer 2022 we were sailing down the interstate heading from Houston, Texas, to Austin when all of a sudden the worst thing happened – no brakes. I was driving at the time and so to not create panic, I didn’t mention our predicament to the rest of the guys until I managed to grind the van to a halt with what brake fluid we had left. What happened next was a week of being stranded in Austin (s/o Rare Bloom for letting us crash) while we waited for an out of stock part to arrive to fix our van. The mechanic then said our vehicle was so rusted he wouldn’t advise driving 50 yards down the street, we cancelled shows, we ran out of money, we considered flying home. The poignant lyric “Nothing ever goes our way” repeats throughout the song because honestly, nothing has ever gone our way. But here we are, back again, doing the thing we love because we’re young and dumb and would like another excuse to get in a van and tour the continent. To quote another line from the song: “Nothing like a little bit of latent fear, of dying young and dumb without my loved ones near” – sign us up!”

No Brakes” was produced, engineered, and mixed by Tim Creviston(Spiritbox, Youth Fountain) and mastered by Stu McKillop (Midnight Peg, By A Thread) at Rain City Recorders, capturing the band’s signature mix of urgency, grit, and bittersweet honesty. Over the years, they’ve released acclaimed records, toured extensively across North America and beyond, and carved out a loyal global fanbase. With “No Brakes,” Chief State prove once again that they’re at the forefront of modern pop-punk—louder, sharper, and hungrier than ever.

We were immediately taken by the EP “Another Kind Of Vision from Charming Arson . The EP is vibrant musical experience that grabs hold of you right from the first note of “Hey,Policeman all the way till the last note of “Magic Alex Knows “

We felt a lot of Brit Pop vibes with Charming Arson. Every song was a well crafted gem that had very cinematic/music theater vibes .

Like the quartet’s music itself, a psychedelic trip of expansive sounds that transports the listener from one place to another, usually within the same blossoming song, the journey Charming Arson took to get here in assembling this kaleidoscopic six-song EP is just as fascinating as the destination.

And at the core, under all the harmonies and melodies and hooks and riffs, is a sense of joy, a feeling that takes anecdotes of modern life with inspirations of yesterday to craft a cohesive and vibrant record that not only stares back at the listener, but provides a cushion for the inevitable fall deep within the band’s blooming world.

That’s at play across Another Kind of Vision’s six blossoming tracks, including the rollercoaster power-pop of May single “Saving Chelsea,” the groove-train swagger of June’s “Inside You I See Everyone,” a homage to the Indian saint Ramana Maharshi that provides the lyric inspiring the record’s title; and the punchy opener and July table-setter “Hey, Policeman!”, inspired by the Breaking Bad character ASAC Hank Schrader.

Combined with three new offerings, including the psychedelic yacht rock of “The Golden Teachers,” a song inspired by a popular strain of magic mushrooms, and aided by a video by Harvard University digital animator Ruth Lingford, which arrives this month, the EP is taking Charming Arson to new creative territories. That’s heard clearly on the street-walking and confrontational “Subway” and EP closer “Magic Alex Knows,” a theatrical tribute to Alexis Mardas, the huckster engineer who once famously duped The Beatles.

The six tracks were engineered, mixed, and mastered by Alex Garcia-Rivera at his all-analogue Mystic Valley Studios in Medford, Massachusetts.

In a musical landscape that at times can be somewhat mundane, it is so refreshing to find an artist like Joey Wit. We felt an instant connection to his smartly written infectious new single “Point Of No Return “

“Point Of No Return is introspective earworm, a magnetic song of wistful longing, paints a vivid portrait of a day spent alone in New York City, reminiscing on a lost love. “A Point of No Return” is a buoyant daydream of psych-pop bursts that push and pull, intertwining lyrical wordplay with glistening guitarwork that bridges a flirtatious gap between American and English influences.

Joey Witt comes across as relatable singer-songwriter who is a skill storyteller who carries a hint of intrigue and mystery in his music .

To understand where Wit is now is to understand where he’s come from; a professional baseball career cut short due to injury, an engagement abruptly called off, a life trajectory that has taken him around the country and back again. All of those things are mere footnotes in his story of the now. Delivering his lived-in lyrics with a barstool wisdom and the chords from his guitar with a confident, playful jangle, “A Point of No Return” is a magnetic song of wistful longing, about looking back in order to look forward – and that helps define Wit’s still-unfolding journey.

Appearing on the track alongside Wit, who in addition to vocals contributed acoustic and electric guitars, bass, and percussion, are Matt Starr (drums), Mick Connolly (electric guitar, bass, backing vocals, and percussion), Clay Selmont (electric guitar), and Lucinda Rowe (backing vocals and piano). There’s a cohesion amongst the players that speaks to the dynamism and drive at play in the tune.

Joey Wit’s sophomore record “Rose Gold”. It’s a record due out in the fall on H1 Massive that includes contributions from 2015 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Ricky Byrd (Joan Jett & The Blackhearts) and drummer Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big).

Loaded with raw emotion, “Bullet in Disguise” packs a mean punch, galloping over Western-tinged dark twang undertones. Vocalist/drummer Lucy Giles takes the listener through the twisted torment of a deceitful romance as she chants, “Your love was nothin’ / your love was nothin’…” before wailing the chorus with vocalist/guitarist Gwendolyn Giles. The single is accompanied by a music video directed by Aja Pop (SOUL GLO, Teens in Trouble).

Jeni Magaña , has sculpted an instant classic with her stunning sophomore solo LP “Teeth” There is this genuine and authentic truth that is ever present throughout “Teeth”

From the first track “Garden” you can feel that you are in for a special collection of well crafted songs . “Beside You” is one of those magical songs that you can’t help but sing along with .

We were drawn in by the absolutely gorgeous melody and flawless vocal performance on “Paul” it is most definitely a must listen.

When asked about “Teeth “ Jeni shared , I recorded this during lockdown in the pandemic. The world started to look strange to me, as if I was an alien plopped down in the middle of Los Angeles but with all these human feelings. I wanted this album to reflect that not only in the lyrics but in the soundscapes as well. I wanted it to sound like earth and space at the same time, so I arranged acoustic guitars, strings, and winds to weave in and out of synth lines and electric guitar solos.”

If we had to choose our favorite track which, is almost impossible to do, we would with out question go with “To My Love” It is one of those songs that you keep with you deep within your heart. “To My Love” is a well written masterpiece that needs to be heard – We loved it.

This song is about my experience going through that program, but it’s also a song that brings light to the fact that if I hadn’t been sent there, I wouldn’t be where I am now,” she says. “Without it, I wouldn’t be able to share my story and open the door for others to share their stories.”

Chloe Star is a Persian and Indigenous singer, songwriter, visual artist, and tribal advocate. Growing up she split her time between Los Angeles and her family’s reservation in San Bernardino. With a childhood that was chaotic and often unstable, she found solace in journaling and writing poetry. She taught herself to play piano and guitar and soon started transforming her prose into lyrics.

Sometimes a song can move you beyond words, this is definitely the case with “Mind & Body” from Tolü Makay.

Mind & Body” was co-written with and produced by Steph Marziano (Phoebe Bridgers, Hayley Williams, Odesza) and mixed by Dan Grech-Marguerat (Lana Del Rey, MUNA, George Ezra).

On “Mind & Body,” Tolü’s strong, soulful vocals take center stage, elevated by a lush bed of ethereal production. Speaking on the poignant message behind the song, she says, “’Mind & Body’ explores the anxiety we feel when our body is numb to the moment while our mind is drowning in senses, screaming for us to be present in the here and now. It’s about allowing ourselves to breathe, about taking care of our bodies, about being present even when everything is moving so rapidly. In this cultural moment we are so concerned and cornered by our thoughts, our appearance, our voices and narratives that we tell ourselves. We found ourselves connecting deeply with beautiful melodies with “Mind&Body” Tölu Makay, has the kind of voice that once you hear it once , it will be next to impossible to forget .

Moving from Nigeria to Ireland at the age of five, Tolü found solace in music as a young girl navigating life in a new country. Music was a way for her to make sense of her emotions, discover her identity, and connect with a wider community. She began singing in church at the age of 8, which led her to enter and subsequently win a national gospel singing competition as a teen.

Tolü strives to create songs that will forever inspire, heal and touch generations to come as she encounters and shares the challenges she faces and growth she experiences in her own life. One of her earliest singles, “Goodbye,” became anthemic across the UK and Ireland, amassing over 2 million streams and counting. Jon Chesbro Gives The Universe An Absolute Musical Gift With His Magnificent New Album “Dryas”

Sometimes an album comes into our lives that is much more than a record but, more of a musical experience. The latest album “Dryas” from Massachusetts experimental electronic music producer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Chesbro.

Jon Chesbro delivers brilliance right out of the gate with “Dryas” as he has delivered an artist’s life hack, merging all eight tracks on his forthcoming album “Dryas” into one singular listening experience.

It’s a bit of a journey, an expansive evolution of sound and atmosphere that finds the Massachusetts multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer exploring the more experimental side of electronic music through aural dalliances with indie, jazz, blues, synth-pop, and other genres. Whether consumed as one long continuous sonic journey or broken up into eight songs that emerge like chapters, the mostly instrumental “Dryas” is an outlier in today’s music world, and Chesbro is finally ready to set it free today (Friday, February 23.)

Many artist claim to have many different influences on an album. However, you can really feel the different genres on “Dryas” Jon Chesbro is a master sculpture of music who effortlessly brings it all together to present a stunning collection of musical nirvana.

“I’ve been waiting for this for way too long,” admits Chesbro. “So to finally get this album done and feel good about it makes me feel complete – and happy that I have a full project to share. If you lay back and listen to this record as one continuous track, it’ll put you through space, no question. But if you’re looking for a specific feeling in a song, you’re likely to find that too.”

For Chesbro, every note is a brushstroke on the canvas of emotion. And while Dryas is a departure from his work as guitarist for the Massachusetts band Derek Smith and the Cosmic Vultures, Chesbro is excited to showcase a new complexity and depth in his solo musical compositions. Lead single “MarchToVictory”, featuring Smith on guest vocals, dropped on New Year’s Day, and a pair of visualizers, the aforementioned “MarchToVictory” and “IntoTheMirror,”

“It all kinda happened organically,” Chesbro says of Dryas. “I was in this really creative mindset for a long time. When inspiration strikes, I don’t stop, I just let the floodgates open up. From a writing perspective, these songs came from desperation. I only had a laptop. A guitar and an interface. I used to have this nice big studio with speakers but as I kept chasing dreams my studio got smaller. I had to create with what little I had.”Chesbro wrote, mixed, mastered, produced Dryas himself, and performed all its instrumentation across its eight tracks. His musical journey began in the church as a young child, singing hymns in the choir and listening to his mother and grandmother play together on the keyboard and organ. With his mother’s urging and support, his life took shape and his personality was developed around playing the guitar.

From the atmospheric, string-laden soundscapes of “CherryBlossom” to the more upbeat and funk-leaning “SpeedOfLight,” Chesbro cycles through his creative rolodex with relative ease, each song blending into the next and further establishing his core identity. It’s a wide-ranging and eclectic spectrum of sounds, all linked together by Chesbro as the core conductor, blending modern electronics and production with an old-school songwriting sensibility.

On swells of cinematic strings, Päter’s latest single the nocturnal “Catching Cold,” chases elusive memories. During the writing process when the song’s pieces finally fell into place, Päter knew it was about their childhood immigration from Iran which left them with the feeling that something intangible was missing. Its sprawling piano offers a peephole into that recollection, the longing it brings, and the “endless itch in my coat” it has left.

In 2020, Parmida emerged as Päter with their first single “Dam, Damn,” a well-received debut that’s amassed 2.4M streams and counting. It opened the doors to the Päterverse, a sonic space inspired by coming-of-age narratives and Päter’s early influences (The Strokes, Kate Bush, Mother Mother) with writing that lives somewhere between Muse and Hillary Duff (yes, really).

The resultant mix’s compelling character and extravagance hint at artists like Neko Case, HAIM, and Fiona Apple with more dissonant forms of melody and harmony derived from the classical Iranian music absorbed during Päter’s youth. During the writing process, which largely took place over their time in a theatre program, Päter was inspired to look inward and confront blocks that lived in their body and mind. It initiated a painful yet positive transition of examining depression and doubts, digging out demons, and charting chaos and cognitive dissonance to arrive at ease in their own company. Päter had long admired Juno-winning Howard Redekopp for his work with Mother Mother (also known for Tegan and Sara, the New Pornographers, Said the Whale) and was thrilled when he jumped on board to co-produce 4-7 Company. A highlight of the recording process was sourcing a vintage upright piano with a magical warm tone that showcased the songs’ intimacy, providing fruitful foundations for them to blossom.

Päter will be taking their upbeat, exuberant live show on tour for the first time, spanning Canada, the US, and eventually beyond. The self-directed video for 4-7 Company’s lead single “Nicotine Hallelujah” was an official selection at the 2023 Austin Under the Stars Film Festival as well as the 2024 Toronto Short Film Festival. 4-7 Company arrives in Spring 2024.

Named one of AltPress’ 24 Artists To Watch In 2024, the outlet praises the band for “reinventing indie music for a modern age while increasing representation for Latin artists in the genre”.

For their label debut, the Texas natives looked to 90’s grunge staples such as Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins to incorporate heavier sounds, while also infusing the modern influences of Dominic Fike and The 1975. Self-produced by the band themselves and mixed bySonny Diperri (The Drums, Animal Collective), late night drive home connected with engineer Ross Ingram (The Black Angels) in search of a darker sound, resulting in the grungy vibe of lead single “Believe Me (Even If I’m Lying)”. From there, the idea of using open D tuning for most of the EP was born as the band explains, “We wanted a cohesive sound between all songs while incorporating the cold, sad feeling of a winter EP.”

First we want just come out and say that this is probably one of the most creative videos we have seen in quite some time . The “Dick Cavett” video from Wicked Cool Record’s Mark Ribler’s Story Road is absolutely genius.

Renowned Rock n Roll figure Marc Ribler, a multifaceted artist (singer, songwriter, musician, and producer) who has served as the
longtime musical director for Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul,
is living proof that dreams can indeed materialize.

Ribler explains, “Like so many of us, I grew up with the Dick Cavett show. In retrospect it is eminently clear that Dick was one of the most important presenters of the rock ‘n’ roll renaissance, not to mention introducing all the key players in every awe-inspiring and earth-shaking event happening in our culture in the 60s, 70s and beyond.

I had a dream that one fine day I wrote a song called “Dick Cavett”, In some 5th dimension magical, mystical reality, Dick heard the song, loved it and asked if I’d like to come to his house to make a music video. Either I’m in a 60s time warp tripping my ass off, or this dream has come true. Many thanks to Dick and his lovely wife Martha – who also appears in the video.”

Friendship Commanders Deliver An Absolute Musical Work Of Art With Latest Album “Mass”

Some time this past summer we were listening to music late one night and seemingly out of nowhere we heard absolute magic.

What we heard was the absolutely stunning single “Blue” from heavy melodic indie Nashville based duo Friendship Commanders . After doing some research we discovered, that “Blue” was part of a new concept album from Friendship Commanders titled “Mass”

According to the duo ( Buick Audra, vocalist, guitarist , primary songwriter and Jerry Roe, drummer and bassist on the recordings ) , “Mass” a is concept record about memory, language, and the state of Massachusetts. The album was co-produced, engineered, and mixed by Kurt Ballou at his Salem, MA studio, GodCity. In addition to the phenomenal album , it is accompanied by a memoir in essays by Buick Audra.

We listen to a lot of music ( We are a music blog , it’s what we do) but, “Mass” from Friendship Commanders , is different .

From the moment you hear the first note on “Blue” down to the last word spoken in “Dissonance “ it is crystal clear that Friendship Commanders have given music lovers everywhere an absolute gift with “Mass”

The overall sound and tone on “Mass” is simply breathtaking, “Fail” and “High Sun “ are both beautifully constructed tracks that are tremendous showcases for both the incredible sound and vibe of Friendship Commanders and the flawless and captivating vocals of Buick Audra .

The musicianship between Buick Audra and Jerry Roe is simply next level, this is on full display on “Vampire “ which we may have sang along with long after the music ended .

Sky has synaesthesia, and seeks to share with listeners his own experience of music as something deep and immersive, comprised of shapes, colours and textures. We cannot contain ourselves any longer… We have been waiting for “Waiting” from Derek Smith And The Cosmic Vultures. And in case you were wondering ( we know you were…) the song is a cinematic, mesmerizing musical composition that is just stunning

“Waiting” merges the Boston songwriter’s solo material with his longtime indie band.

After forming roughly a decade ago, the Cosmic Vultures developed a reputation around New England for their electric live show and eclectic blend of genre-spanning rock and roll. But a few years back, frontman, vocalist, and principal songwriter Derek Smith branched out with solo material, unleashing the creative fire burning within. He released a pair of albums (2022’s Rubedo and last year’s Obscura) that explored new musical territories before October’s well-received and anthemic “Black Angel” single, all featuring members of the band, around the same time the Vultures were nominated for Rock Artist of the Year at the 2023 New England Music Awards.

Before the year was out, Smith and the band decided to merge and become a unified entity, re-christening the project as Derek Smith and the Cosmic Vultures, and the first offering in this new music chapter arrives today with “Waiting,” a celestial cruise through an alt-rock galaxy that was produced and mixed by David Minehan at Woolly Mammoth Sound in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The irony is not lost that Smith and the Cosmic Vultures quickly rediscovered their musical chemistry through a single called “Waiting,” as with both projects gaining momentum in the Boston music scene, the time was right to come together once again for a unified creative vision.

‘Waiting’ is about waiting for something to happen,” Smith says. “Waiting for the money to fall in your lap. Waiting for the big break. Waiting for death. Waiting for the chickens to come home to roost. It’s everything and anything you can be waiting for. But for me I always had this idea that maybe something will just happen. I was very wrong. Waiting for something to happen to you is a sad thing. I’ve learned that you need to go out and do it. Do what you need to do. Make your own luck.”

Smith always envisioned the final version of “Waiting” to have a big, galactic sound to it, something to be heard in the car while flying up and down Interstate 93. And after the grand ambition and skyscraper force of “Black Angel,” enlisting Minehan for that final studio polish and working with the Cosmic Vultures – lead/rhythm electric guitarist and backing vocalists Jonathan Chesbro and Michael Strakus; bassist Steve Constantino; and drummer Dalton DeLima – made all the sense in the world. The three players were natural fits on “Waiting,” complementing Smith on vocals, B3 Hammond Organ, and rhythm guitar.

“I wanted to do something a little harder for this one,” Smith admits. “I can do more than just soft and melodic. I didn’t think of it as the first song after merging, but more of the next chapter after ‘Black Angel’. I look at the body of work that hasn’t been released and sort of see what makes sense next. Maybe I was just tired of waiting to record this one.”

So far, merging Derek Smith the solo artist with Derek Smith the frontman of the Cosmic Vultures has been seamless, as the band continues to perform live around the New England area, taking part in the New England Music Awards’ Last Band Standing competition in March. With the two entities coming together, the catalog has now expanded to include five albums, two EPs, and now, with “Waiting”, there’ll be four stand-alone singles.”

Sometimes when you hear a song it just speaks to you … it’s not a planned event just something that just cosmically materializes. “Waiting” is not only is beautifully constructed but , it is also a song with a message that you can feel deep in your heart and soul.

“Northern Lights” has a very organic and natural feel and sound . Gab De La Vega has carefully constructed an absolutely stunning track .

If this is any indication what to expect on the new album “Life Burns , which comes out March 1st.

Life Burns” is being released by SBÄM Records worldwide, in collaboration with Sell The Heart Records (United States), Epidemic Records, Motorcity Produzioni, and Overdrive (all in Italy).

The first single “Off My Chest” (released in December) delivered a more powerful full-band sound, pushing boundaries with dynamic drum beats and fierce guitar riffs, unveiling De La Vega’s hardcore and punk roots. But “Northern Lights” highlights a different side of the upcoming album, exposing listeners to more balanced, yet still punchy, melodically elaborate and solidly grooved sounds, giving the impression that “Life Burns” profiles as a cohesive but at the same time multi-faceted album.

The feelings evoked by the depth of the lyrics and vocals are amplified by the songwriting of a track that introduces itself with a loose pace, only to astonish the listener as the song unravels. “Northern Lights” is in fact a lively and vibrant track, capable of developing a sonic and emotional climax
amplified by the dreamy arrangement, elaborated in the studio in collaboration with producer and bandmate Simone Piccinelli, guitarist of Gab De La Vega’s backing band The Open Cages.

Gab De La Vega comments: “I wanted to share “Northern Lights” as the second single taken from the upcoming album because it is one of the tracks that most reflects the sense of depth that “Life Burns” will have, both in sound and lyrics. Juxtaposed with “Off My Chest” it definitely creates the kind of contrast that can make you realize how rich this album is in every sense of the word. This album represents the most honest and unfiltered side of myself, not just as musician, but as a person balancing between the negative things of life and the drive towards the positive ones, between being right and being wrong, dreams and reality.

“Northern Lights” is a song that plays with emotions, touching peaks in every direction, transforming for example the concept of solitude, presenting it not as a negative element, but as a companion on the journey toward awareness of one’s condition within the complex design of life. The single comes with a music video that translates in pictures the mood of the song. Gab De La Vega says: “The video was an idea of my guitarist and producer Simone Piccinelli. I knew it needed to be something very particular, just like the song. Simone had this vision for this video and he thought we needed something that could visually match the song and its nature. I gave him carte blanche because I knew I could trust his creativity. Joey Gaibina behind the camera did all the rest. I simply had a great time filming this on a cold december day on Lake Garda, which is not far from where I live. I think the visuals match the intensity of the song and the landscapes we used in the video are perfect for the kind of lyrics this song has.”

We are always excited to listen to new artists. Because, you never know what you hear …. Recently we sat down and listened to the debut single “Deep End” from New York based singer songwriter Alessandra and what we heard was absolutely amazing.

At the tender age of 20, Alesandra has already begun to carve out a niche space for herself in the music world. Her journey began in the quiet suburbs of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, where she started to write her own songs at the young age of 7. These early compositions were more than mere childhood play: they were the first signs of a burgeoning talent; a raw, innate ability to blend lyrics and melodies into something greater.

As Alesandra grew older, her aspirations stretched beyond the boundaries of her small Pennsylvania town. She set her sights on the bright lights of New York City, a place synonymous with dreams and ambition. Her acceptance into New York University was an important milestone, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Alesandra’s story. If we’re being honest … listening to “So Many Ways..” from Scumbags was probably the best 39 minutes and 56 seconds we have spent in a while .

“So Many Ways..” is the band’s second album and while it has the same melodiand sonic goodness from their first record “Sour Days” there is definitely signs of maturity on “So Many Ways”

“I think that since our first album, Sour Days, we have matured a lot in terms of composition and arrangements. We started hearing new references and brought them to our songs.” reports Chris Oliveira, the band’s drummer.

This maturity is already evident in production. Part of the album was recorded at Forest Lab, in Rio de Janeiro, a studio specialized in completely analog recording. And another part was recorded at Eletric Meduza, a recording studio located in Brusque, Santa Catarina, which also works with analogue elements in the recordings.

For Chris, the new songs will bring a different feel to what people are used to hearing in Scumbags. “The upcoming album will bring a new aesthetic to the band, a new sound. No longer the 90s punk rock that we are used to playing, but we are going to bring more risky and different things.”

Right from start, “So May Ways..”delivers … The title track “So Many Ways..” kicks off an album full of pure punk rock bliss.

Scumbags have a familiar sound but they have a style that is all their own, and it absolutely kicks ass .

We were beyond honored to check out the new EP “keep ‘er lit” via Rum Bar Records from Boston based rock band Girl With A Hawk .

Our first introduction to Girl With A Hawk was back this past January when the band released the absolutely beautiful and heartfelt track “Same Stars” since then we have fallen deeply for the amazing brand of rock that Linda Viens and company bring to the table.

Featuring five tracks, including four prior singles, like last month’s “Feel Me,” the EP is a showcase for Girl with a Hawk’s engaging and infectious brand of rock and roll, which sometimes veers into new wave territory, other times into emotive guitar-pop, Americana, and modern rock. It’s a record of perseverance, and its title, keep ‘er lit, taken from an old Irish expression that loosely translates to “do not stop,” is a reflection of that attitude.

There is this genuine authenticity that seems to be woven deep in the musical DNA of Girl With A Hawk that, we absolutely love. What you get is real music that touches your heart and soul with each memorable note , all of which is front and center on “keep’er lit”

In our opinion “keep’er lit” is proof positive why Linda Viens has one of the best voices out there period. She sings with an energy and passion that is like no other voice in music today.

“All the songs on the EP are about surviving the vagaries of fate as well as taking responsibility for choices made, etc., about the search for identity and wholeness (and in some cases; sobriety), and about finding some kind of peace and comfort through knowing one is not actually alone, even though in tough times, we can feel alone,” Viens says. “It’s also about the many ways we are connected to our loved ones, and rooting for them, even if separated in physical time and space. There are a lot of parallel themes with keep ‘er lit and Justine and the Unclean’s record, The Signal Light – addiction, depression, and surviving life’s tough losses and challenges.”

The experience has brought the band even closer together. In Girl with a Hawk, the singer-and-guitarist Viens is joined by keyboardist Richard Lamphear, drummer Nancy Delaney, and guitarist Dan Coughlin. Original bassist Lee Harrington, who appears on the record, has since been smoothly replaced by Daniel Bernfeld. Their shared chemistry is evident across keep ‘er lit – from the emotive draw of “Same Stars” to the pop-rock buoyancy of “The Romantic” to the new wave flair of “Feel Me.” Viens says despite it all, the writing and recording process for this record has been joyous, with the band coming together for the music they’re creating.

When asked about “Same Kids”, Thomas Nicholas shared :

The cover art is just about showing the stretch of my career and even though 30 years have passed, I still feel like the same kid. Which I think is true for us all.

The person that pops in my head is my friend from Kindergarten, who recently passed away. We would see each other every 5 years or so, and each time it was like no time had passed. It honestly still feels like he isn’t gone.

The song was a concept that Taylor Carroll had an idea for. Just about writing a song that talked about how we all still feel the same since we were kids. The chord progression and tempo gave me instant nostalgia vibes, so I just started writing lyrics about things I remember from growing up. Mixed tapes, CDs, etc

We actually wrote this song a day before Blink182 dropped their title track for their new album. I remember thinking how weird is it that I haven’t written a slower ballad type song in forever and the day I do, Blink182 is too. It was very symbiotic. The main difference is that Blink’s song is about them and “Same Kids” is meant for everyone to get nostalgic about thieir own life and memories of growing up.”

We were first introduced to Wesson , this past January, when they released the single “Made Me Happy “ We fell instantly for the perfectly written song . We were over the moon happy when we got the chance to listen to their debut “All We Are”

Wesson is led by singer-songwriter Chris Wesson.

The four-piece band was formed under the mutual decision to find like-minded souls who needed music as part of their everyday life and essence to their being. Along with bassist Callum, guitarist Jimmy, and drummer Dale, WESSON creates music which is relatable, conversational and meaningful.

Now unveiling their debut album, All We Are, WESSON are proud to showcase a sound that perfectly encapsulates what they stand for, sharing “Releasing this album feels like the end of an era, we are eager to show the world All We Are.” Lyrically the album is a collection of intimate insights into Chris’ mind and thoughts, including the frustrations and difficulties with connecting to people and those relationships. Based generally on real life scenarios and how they can affect one’s mental health, All We Are is both raw and vulnerable. The band confide, “Having expectations and being let down in those situations can create resentments. The album was a cathartic experience for Chris and is ultimately about coming to terms, letting go and finding peace.”

Title-track “All We Are” was largely inspired by Chris watching his children growing up and being proud of who they were becoming. It speaks about the frustration you have when it feels like time is slipping through your fingers and coming to terms with not being able to do it all. Sonically, the track emits a melodic and dreamy feeling accompanied by powerful 80’s rock elements.

“I have always lived on an island of my own dreams, even back in Africa,” shares Cameroonian, avant-garde, Afro-pop artist and balladeer Moken Nunga. “Today, I am experiencing island life in America, as I’ve been abandoned by many members of my family. If you can stay optimistic in adversity such as this, you can produce your best work. Out of isolation came the best songs of my career.”

The Atlanta, Georgia-based artist is referring to his finely crafted third album, An African Island in an American City. The 15-song record is an imaginative and purposeful collection of songs with a freewheeling melting-pot aesthetic that cements Moken’s artistic identity while it also showcases his versatility.

We were first introduced to Moken back in August, with his amazing single “Glory Days” We have said it before but it bares repeating , “We have been reviewing music in one form or another for 30 years, We can honestly say that “Glory Days “ from Moken, truly took our breath away” .

An African Island in an American City is personal, political, abstractly poetic, and, at times, playful. We were absolutely mesmerized by the opening track “Island Life” . The track has this vibrant energy that really made the song stand out . Vocally Moken shines every so bright on “Island life” The haunting “Blood River” is a sparse and searing ballad with Moken’s flickering vocals delicately supported by a moody piano track. The song courageously and directly addresses the desertion of his family. Moken sings: now I am free, now I am safe, singing this song, for you to know/blood river, blood river, blood river/I have been swimming in you for fifty years/blood river, river of my blood,river of my bloooode/I have been swimming in you for fifty years.

We were taken by the hypnotic beats on “Mama Africa “ We were especially moved by the moving vocal performance by Moken, you could feel that he was giving his whole heart and soul in the performance.

The majestic, “New Hope Of The Morning,” features an overlay of Moken’s vocals with his crying melodies weaving in and out of his commanding low-register vocals. It’s a stinging political song in the style of Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. The song’s emotional apex is the talk poem where Moken says: O those who believe are running straight on the clashing glow under the sun/under the wave of conflicts/no one is backing up, without believes, without believes/rage rising, clashing, millions running,coming out loose, coming out loose/from their old and new cages. “I know this song captures what is going on in America and the world right now,”

Faunea comes from Danish, Peruvian, and Asian descent.

Faunea’s voice is simply otherworldly. It has been described as a delightful combination of lightly intimate yet with a surprisingly powerful dark side. Her sound is a playful universe, with an eerie electronic vibe. When her light and innocent voice occasionally breaks down in a dark and haunting feeling the contrast becomes clear, and she’s guiding the listener through the maze of a slightly manic character.

It is always a pleasure to listen to musicians who are top their game. Seth Glier proves without a doubt with his new single, “Mammoth” that he is at his very best.

“The song explores questions such as, “what if you were brought back to life and found yourself in a world you could no longer recognize?” and “What if you learned the reason you were resurrected was to save humanity?” Seth shares, “Scientists Sergey Zimov and Nikita Zimov are in the process of picking through the ice and melting permafrost of northern Siberia for the perfect frozen sample of a Woolly Mammoth. Their goal is to take the DNA and bring the mammoth back to the plains it once roamed. There is some merit to this idea as a climate solution. The Permafrost is one of the largest carbon reservoirs we have. In the grazing ecosystems, mammoths trample snow while foraging during the winter. When the snow is packed beneath their significant weight, it allows deeper freezing of the permafrost and thus protects it from degradation. I was struck by this and how strange it might feel for the mammoth & decided to write the song from its perspective.”

A gifted songwriter, is also a gifted storyteller as well , Seth Glier is both world class songwriter and storyteller.

We felt an immediate connection with “Mammoth” We were literally hanging on every note . Seth Glier has brilliantly crafted a song that gently tugs at your heart and soul.

Not only has Seth Glier given us a stunning song but he is also announcing today that his highly anticipated upcoming album “EVERYTHING” which is set for release January 26th. The eight track folk-drenched indie pop full length is a hopeful and important narrative entirely about climate solutions.

The “Backseat Therapy “ video was filmed with cinematographer Sam East, we absolutely love the Scorsese feel of this video.

Deathproof’s previous singles Lupines and Velociraptor were championed by the likes of Ones To Watch, Loudwire, Louder Than War Radio, Sirius XM and BBC Introducing and saw the band go on to secure slots at festivals such as Icebreaker, Burn It Down and Estonia’s Tallinn Music Week.

Backseat Therapy, taken from the EP, was inspired by an encounter vocalist and lyricist Oli Rainsford had had with a down on his luck taxi driver.

Explaining what happened, Rainsford says, “I wrote ‘Backseat Therapy’ after jumping in a cab one day and the driver started venting to me about the shitty day he was having. We were continuously getting stuck in traffic and he kept apologising that he couldn’t get me to where I was going quicker, despite me telling him it was absolutely fine and not his fault. The conversation led to him telling me about how badly some passengers had treated him and that he was considering quitting. I ended up kind of being a life coach for the journey and reassured him that he was a nice bloke and he was doing a good job. Hence ‘Backseat Therapy’. Taxi, this one’s for you!”

Krooked Tongue is clearly a band with their foot on the gas. They are truly gaining speed and recognition with everything they do ( and it is certainly deserved ) . Kooked Out who hail from the Massachusetts town of Stoneham formed in 2013 by guitarist/singer John Fiore,having gone through various lineup changes the band found it’s groove when drummer Chris Laskey in 2014.

“Vis Viva” does a phenomenal job of capturing the eclectic vibe and amazing sound that Kooked Out has perfectly crafted . Listening to “Vis Viva” you can’t help but be mesmerized by Kooked Out , we pressed play and 44 minutes and 58 seconds later we felt like we went on a tropical vacation and , we think our blood pressure lowered by a good 20 points.

There are so many gems on “Vis Viva” , “The Weekend “ is such and electric and catchy song . ( We were belting it out down the highway in no time ) So many different styles and vibes are on “Vis Viva” there is literally something for everyone.

One track that really caught our ear is “Turning Stones “ perfect vocals with a killer melody- we were hooked (oh the guitar work was straight fire)

The band really showed that they are world class musicians with their cover of “Apache” made famous by the Shadows in 1960 and written by Jerry Lordan.

We always like to pick a favorite when we review an album . It was so difficult on this one but…. We absolutely loved “Who You Gonna Tell” We loved everything about this track , the vocals the retro groove it’s absolutely brilliant.

We, being from a certain era are so psyched that the band is put the recording on tape

We’re psyched to put this album out on cassette,” admits Fiore. “Even in a digital age it just wouldn’t feel right to us without a tangible copy of the record that you can grab a hold of and put into your collection. Growing up we always preferred and loved the ritualistic element of going home grabbing a record, a CD or a cassette tape and putting it on and really actively listening to it. You know, you’re looking at the artwork, the track listing and lyrics, all of which becomes equally as important to you and your experience with that album. You can see it from across the room and know exactly what it is and that’s what we wanted to do with Vis Viva.”

We recently had the wonderful opportunity to check out 18 year old Harvard bound Colorado singer- songwriter Riley Max and her amazing debut solo album “ROY G BIV “

Written, performed and produced at 17 by a prodigious young talent from Colorado culminating in a final session on her 18th birthday, ROY G BIV simply states that each moment and relationship is defined by the different colors of our emotions. Composing the music and lyrics, singing, playing keyboard and guitar, and co-producing each track, Riley is joined by musicians Doctor Noize, Art Bouton, David Amaya, and full strings.

There are so many colorful musical gems on “Roy G BIV” from Riley Max , including the first single and video “Blue” I came up with Blue first — after that I came up with Yellow,” Riley says of the latter guitar and voice folk art song that’s the album’s single-take showcase of her skills as a live singer and instrumentalist.

Other highlights include Green, written alone in her room while longing to be at her uncle’s camp in the mountains that Riley regularly visited throughout childhood to get away from the busy modern world: “Green is the anchor of the album because all the other songs are about interactions with other people, and Green is more about connecting with yourself.”

We absolutely love the sound and vibe of Brian Tell And The LoveMakers it’s a modern sound with a throwback vibe to the garage band era in the 60’s Based in Austin, Texas, they take a direct, uncomplicated approach to songwriting that’s influenced by decades of rock, blues, and punk history. The result is a searing, style-bending sound that’s modern yet old school.

“Stand Out “ is an absolutely electric song with an addictive melody that you just can’t refuse . The band as a whole are solid unit with world class musicianship.

The band says, “Stand Out was the first material we all wrote together – essentially becoming a band and finding our sound. Max came up with a bass line, and we all joined in. So when we heard that there was a band who was making music in the vain of All…..

We had to check it out immediately. We were already fans of Mercy Music and Sharp Shock ( We love Sharp Shock’s cover of “Silly Girl “ by the Descendents). So we were super double pumped when we heard they will be releasing their debut album “Stop The World”due out Friday April 14th via Wiretap Records (US), Brassneck Records (UK) and Waterslide Records (Japan). Skofee Brings Complete Joy With Flawless New EP “Joyland”

Recently we checked out Los Angeles based indie pop singer /Songwriter Skofee and her brand new EP “Joyland”Named after an amusement park Skofee used to visit in Kansas, the six-track EP chronicles finding joy in various ways after falling out of touch with it.

We are not going pull any punches with this review. “Joyland” is an absolute musical triumph, from start to finish Skofee is simply amazing.

From the first track” “I’m Sorry I Killed Your Plant” the listener is treated to a brilliant song that is a total gem . We found ourselves completely mesmerized with this song .

“Mad At you “ was filled with a hypnotic beat that complimented the stunning vocals on this track. We found ourselves hitting repeat on this song multiple times …. A beautiful melodic composition.

“Quicksand” the song is “my ode to hitting a breaking point. It’s about the sinking realization that you have to let go of someone that you’ve been desperately trying to hold onto,” confides Skofee.

As we remarked in our original review…We love everything about this song . It has this dark but really interesting tone / vibe to it that really makes the track stand out . Oh and the vocals are just flawless.

The video for “Quicksand” is simply spectacular . The visuals, directed by Holy Smoke Photography, combines balloon people, a plexiglass box and Skofee floundering in a kiddie pool with a GoPro for a novel and imaginative take on dealing with tangled emotions. And what’s a video without balloon people?

“Wind Up Hero” was our introduction to Skofee, and boy were we impressed. We Love the vibe on this song , it has this energy to it that makes it such a memorable track ( Not to mention we break out into dance mode, when we hear it) .

In our opinion the shining star of the “Joyland” is the song “Easier” This song is absolutely gorgeous. “Easier” is Skofee at her absolute best , the vocals are just stunning perfect . You can really see what an amazing artist truly is, with this song.

The title track of the EP “Joyland” is another spectacular display of the amazing artistry of Skofee . We also love the beautiful musical orchestration on “ Joyland “ it was simply breathtaking.

Housewife – the project of Toronto-based singer and songwriter Brighid Fry (She/They )

The new song reunites Fry with frequent co-writer and producer Gabe Simon (Lana Del Rey, Noah Kahan) in Nashville, TN and includes a co-write from fellow singer-songwriter Savana Santos.

We are absolutely over the moon with “Fuck Around Phase”is a perfectly written pop gem that is overflowing with originality. Beyond the stellar sonic melodic sound of “Fuck Around Phase” , the song stands out because it has this authenticity that you can’t fake . Brighid Fry aka Housewife is the real deal .

“Fuck Around Phase” is the first taste of new music from Housewife this year and introduces a more mature and intentional indie-rock driven sound. Guided by a lush mix of distorted guitar riffs and pop-flavored melodies, “Fuck Around Phase” is a stealthily infectious song. “This song is about learning to enjoy yourself and be present after going through a difficult time,” says Fry. “I want to embrace being messy and not take things too seriously!“

We have absolutely been loving Emily Breeze and her beyond amazing new record “Rapture” ( we put it in our day play list from day 1, and it hasn’t moved )

When we heard that Massive Attack’s Daddy G had prepared a club remix of ‘Confessions of an Ageing Party Girl’ from Emily Breeze …. We were simply elated.

Speaking about his decision to remix the single, Grant Marshall (Daddy G) explained, “I’ve always loved Emily Breeze’s music, not only is she a super talent but she is also from Bristol. When I asked her if I could remix one of her tracks I was chuffed when she agreed.”

Daddy G is the walking embodiment of the Bristol sound. The intersection of Dub Reggae, Hip Hop, Punk and Dance music which conjures images of dark dancefloors and inner city bedsits is something that has never really left Bristol and it was a thrill to hear my song “Confessions of an Ageing Party Girl” teleported into that space. I used to live on the same street as Daddy G and he would smile and wave from his Orange VW van. I would never have dreamed when I used to listen to Massive Attack as a teenager that one of the founding members alongside his amazing writing/production partner Stew Jackson (Robot Club) would remix one of my songs. It’s an honour,“ exclaims Emily.

The original single ‘Confessions of an Ageing Party Girl’ was taken from Emily’s second album ‘Rapture‘ which was released on February 10th 2023 via Sugar Shack Records.

We recently checked out German based singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer M. Byrd and his magnificent new single “Outside Of Town”

We were absolutely moved when listened to “Outside Of Town “ which,was inspired by a friend who was displaced due to war, “Outside of Town” touches on the struggles of uncertainty and the pain of loss.

M. Byrd juxtaposes this with messages of hope heard in the atmospheric guitars and his impassioned vocals yearning for a better future.

“I wrote ‘Outside Of Town’ a few days after meeting a friend who had to flee from a war with his daughter. It tells his story in a fictional city that is surrounded by desert and war, sustaining itself with big walls and what little water they have left.” M. Byrd adds, “every time I play the song, it reminds me of how I admire people who are fighting for a better life for themselves and their families. All of us could be in the situation of having to look past the borders of our homes, and every one of us should play a part in helping the people who are willing to go through so much suffering to provide a safer place for their family and children.“

“Outside Of Town” follows the release of M. Byrd’s previous singles “Seed,” “Flood” and “Over You / Over Me”, all off his debut full-length album The Seed out June 16th.

Nashville based Americana meets rock singer/songwriter Rutherford Royal new EP “Bleak” profiles a series of misunderstandings about love .

“Each track presents as a cameo which is an attempt at describing times when I have felt lost in the liminal spaces of bachelorhood or failing relationships. Though the lyrics take plenty of artistic liberties, the songs themselves are true experiences which serve as a record of my personal struggle to connect,” confides Rutherford Royal.

Every song on “Bleak” is a well crafted musical composition that showcases Rutherford Royal’s honest and authentic songwriting style . He writes Southern Gothic cameos which he weaves into often dark, Indie Americana. After writing and curating the works for an album he records and mixes the music for Rutherford Royal (as well as other artists) in his remote cabin studio overlooking a hidden waterfall in southern Tennessee.

We love the groove on “Let Me In “ The chorus is catchy and memorable. The vocal on “Let Me In “ is flawless .

The mysterious and somber groove on “Bleak “ fits perfectly with the haunting vocals convey the message of the song perfectly.

The very soulful “Lords and Ladies “ is Rutherford Royal at his absolute best . This song is an absolute gem.

“Keep It Between Us “ , “Summer Heat” and “Back Burner” are all magnificent songs that we have happily been keeping on repeat.

“Bleak” is a must listen for any music lover. Seeing how good the EP is we couldn’t help but wonder how amazing all these songs must sound live .
